Hi everyone,

In undergrad I learned the ARIO method but Chad taught CARDIO, which seemed to be reverse of ARIO. Now i'm getting confused with how to tell what is a strong acid. ARIO uses the conjugate base but chad said CARDIO you want to find the least stable base? I get confused, could someone please help me with this topic. Thank you!

ARIO...CARDIO...... What will be next ? I have given this question some thought. I love helping the students on SDN, and especially love the Organic questions.

I will answer this question, but I feel you will not like my answer. I have taught Organic Chemistry for over 30 years, and students often struggle on acid-base concepts in Organic Chemistry. This area is very important to understanding reactions and mechanisms.

ARIO and CARDIO are silly rules that often do NOT work.

Your best bet is to get a text that is easy to read on this topic. The Janice Smith book is by far the EASIEST to understand. Next would be Francis Carey , followed by Dr. Wade. Choose one of these 3 books and read the chapter. After you read the chapter, do the book problems and use the Student Solution manual. Beyond that, feel free to post questions on this board, and I personally promise to answer your specific questions.

Don't give up. Organic Chemistry is not that bad after you stop the memorizing and start UNDERSTANDING.

Good luck to all

Dr. Jim Romano
