Hi everyone,

I am struggling a bit with my letters of recommendation situation, and wanted to ask for advice. I was a science and non-science double major at my university. I’ve been in the processing of requesting letters of recommendations, and all of my science professors are at capacity, or on leave. I found a LOR from my math professor, but I took this course 3 years ago during the summer as a non-degree student. I am confident this will be a strong letter, but I just wanted to ask the harm if I do not have a science letter of recommendation from my degree - granting university, as a science major? Or, if I end up getting one, is a generic letter from my school better than a stronger one outside of my school?

Very lost and confused on what to do, and not sure if I need to delay a cycle to get this situation + a few other minor parts of my application strengthened.

A good rule of thumb for LORs is 2 science and 1 non-science LORs to meet LOR requirements. This varies depending on the schools you are applying to, but many highly recommend/require a letter from a science professor. A generic one is not ideal, but, if it is your only option, take it.

Your app should be the highest quality you can get it, no matter first or second try. If you can't swing the letters this cycle, hold off and avoid sending lukewarm/hollow LORs that may work against you.
