Hello Folks,

At the rehab hospital I am currently working at, we use structured interviews to assess patients' substance use. The problem is: I find these interviews to be lacking and am considering alternatives.

Since I've just started this project, I've only considered one set of questions (from Kleinman's explanatory model). Are there any other structured interviews (or set of questions) that are practical and short?

Hey,

I am not sure what information you are trying to assess with regards to substance use. There are a multitude of measures that have been developed to assess a variety of constructs. I've listed a few below and provided a couple of links that might prove useful in your search.

In terms of diagnosis, I find the alcohol and drug modules of the SCID to be user friendly. With respect to drinking patterns, Miller's Form-90 and the Sobbell's Time Line Follow Back are great for establishing measurements of quantity/frequency/intensity. The CIWA, in combination with these measures and a thorough medical history, can be useful for determining level of care and potential for adverse withdrawal symptoms. Evaluating motivation for change can be tricky for a number of reasons, but measures like the SOCRATES and URICA are good to consider. See the website listed below for more ideas. The first allows you to down load research instruments and the second provides comprehensive information about alcohol assessment more generally.

I hope this helps!! Good Luck!!!

Hi FuturePsyDoc,

Thank you for your suggestions. I will look into them.

it's not short, but the ASI (addiction severity index) is good
