Hello, Ive never used a forum of any kind so forgive me If there is already a bunch of similar questions out there already answered and I just didnt see them. First off, a brief history.
Im 28 years old and Im in my sophomore year of my undergrad. I worked construction for 10 years before getting my EMT-B certification and falling in love with emergency medicine. After working in an emergency room for awhile I decided I was going to go to school and pursue a career in medicine.
Since I went to a tech high school and was out of school for so long I had to take a semester of lower level classes. I never really put much effort in high school as I was planning on taking over the family business one day and thought I had it all figured out. Once I started college it turned out I really enjoyed learning and was actually a decent student (with the easier classes anyway).
Now as I go on and the classes are getting harder my confidence is taking a huge blow. Ive never been good at math and calculus is getting the best of me so far this semester. In A&P, a class I was really looking forward too, I cant seem to pass an exam. Thank god for the lab exams Im getting perfect scores on or Id be failing. My other classes such as Integrative biology is going great and my english lit course is also going well.
I guess my question is, is there anyone out there who had struggles in their undergrad and started to feel like they were not smart enough to pull this off? Im getting concerned that if Im having this much trouble now IF I get into med school will I be able to handle it.

If anyone has any advice or stories about there struggles and how they overcame them Id be grateful, thank you in advance.

I personally did not have struggles but was a tutor for many students who did!

You are not alone. The best thing is to realize you are having trouble early on in the class and get help. A lot of colleges offer free tutoring to students in all subjects-see if yours does. If not and you can not pay someone, form a study group from people in your class 🙂

It is all about knowing how you learn. I have a friend in medical school who did not do very well in undergrad but she did well enough. She utilized tutors when needed. In med school she has never been behind. She studies hard! But so does everyone 🙂

If you really want this you will find a way to make it happen. Good luck!

Thank you for your quick response. Study groups is something almost every teacher suggests but its something I never do as Im afraid theyll just turn into a social hour and I wont get anything done. I gues it time to try something new, thanks again

The hard part isn't the material, it's trying to figure out how to learn properly, as everyone learns in a different way. I'd say utilize tutoring/study groups, and figure out ways to get the information down, be that through reading the book over and over, meticulous note-taking, recording lectures, etc.Initially it'll be work-intensive, but you'll get the hang of it for sure.

I could recommend drawing out things for anatomy enough, especially with cardio vascular.
