Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place- Residency Program

Hi,

I wanted some opinions on this current problem I'm in. My wife is a 3rd year medical studnet and will be applying to residency programs soon. The problem is my wife isn't a legal US resident or citizen and she lied on her med school app saying she was a citizen. She lied though becuase she knew she wouldn't have accepted as undocumented. So she lied and we were paying out of pocket for tuition. But, eventually we couldn't anymore and she had to come clean that she lied. This turned into a huge question of ethics by these people and appaently the crime of the century. The questoned since she lied on her app. she could be a risk to patient safety. When she has fellow students who are dealing drugs and using them ( ****ing joke!) they're ethics aren't questioned lol. No the person who wants to follow her dreams is.

Anyways, those douchebags make her go before the committee and she is allowed to stay although they don't trust her. We also workout a payment plan and have stuck with it ever since. So now residency applying time is here and the committee is going to submit a letter about this whole situation b/c she is Charles manson apparently. Thats the problem, can she defend herself in her personal statement? or would that look even worse or do you think the committee will flip.

Also, my wife is a good person she got her undergrad from Columbia University ( NY, NY) bachelors in Neursocience and did amazing research. ALso paid out of pocket by her hard working family. This committee has been nothing but vindictive and disrespectful to us. Is there any recourse we take once she is out? I mean they even read her psychological reports b/c she was bullied into signing a waiver. I really want to do something, what do you suggest?

Your wife lied about her citizenship, and you want to go after the investigating committee for being mean about it? I'm not unsympathetic to your situation but you have no moral high ground here.

Whether you agree or disagree, the law is the law. To be terribly honest, your wife is lucky the committee's empathy outweighed what was certainly in their right to dismiss her. She could be a lovely person with many accomplishments, but the bottom line is she lied for selfish gain and now has to deal with the consequences. It does not sound at all like the administation is being vindictive, disrespectful douchebags as you put it - their reaction is quite appropriate. I'm not entirely sure what the ramifications are for them (L2D can probably shed light on that) but I bet it's not pretty. How in the world can one feign citizenship without a SS# by the way? In any case, if it were me, I would definitely address it in the personal statement. I think that's expected.

Im an international student at an American med school so I can answer this if you care...

As a student (like she was during undergrad at Columbia), if you work for your school (as she did in the lab) a non-American can quality for a SS#. I tried to get a SS# so im pretty familiar with the process (unfortunately my school doesn't allow students to work while in the med program). So as long as she got a SS#, I'm assuming the admissions committee doesn't follow up on verifying it.... I mean after all what are the chances of this actually happening. Even if they wanted to verify, I dont think they have the capacity to link a SS# to citizenship

Definitely an interesting situation. Highly unethical and wrong, but interesting. It kind of upsets me since I am a legit alien and it makes us look bad. (although im not from a country you would stereotype with illegal immigrants)

No excuse for lying about her citizenship status. There are thousands of foreign medical grads that apply to the Match every year - they seek training here through an established legal pathway and are sponsored by the residency program that chooses them. Is what your wife did fair to them or to the tens of thousands of potential immigrants waiting 10+ years for their petitions to come up?

Perhaps, she should've delayed her medical school application until after she became naturalized. I don't think things will end up in her favor - it's an unfortunate situation all around.

She lied and got caught. She has to take ownership of this, accept responsibility and blame, not sit there pointing out colleagues who do worse things, or calling the administration vindictive and douchebags. Sounds like they did her a huge favor not throwing her out outright. You really have no recourse, and I suspect you won't go far down this path without some ownership of the mistakes, rather than all the deflection suggested by this thread.

This is going to be a hard pill to stomach for residency precisely because you are going to make mistakes and be expected to own up to them pretty regularly. Those residents who lie about forgetting to check labs, see patients, etc and such tend to have very short careers. And they too always point out their colleagues who they perceive as doing less, and the administration who is being vindictive. Ownership of mistakes is huge in medicine. You drop a grenade, you jump on it quick. It's part of professionalism.

This. If she's an illegal alien, even if she paid cash for undergrad and got through a legitimate American medical school, there's no way a residency program can take her without a visa or green card. Given that the DREAM act didn't pass and that the US government isn't exactly keen on giving illegal immigrants in our country citizenship, her only real hope is if her husband the OP is an American citizen.

The first thing I would do is find an immigration lawyer and run through your options. Your wife currently cannot be employed, especially not in a federal government subsidized program (i.e. residency).

You're in the right place. When you're living in a foreign country illegally, and you've been caught in a years-long fraud, when it seems that your massive investment in higher education is going to be all for naught, the best possible thing to do is:

1. Create an account on a forum for medical students (known immigration law specialists).

2. Solicit advice on said forum about your complex legal, financial, and ethical quandary.

3. ?????

4. PROFIT!!!

First of all, none of you know my wife or know anything about her moral character. Yea, maybe I didn't use the most eloquent language when I first posted, sorry, I was just venting. I am an American citizen, I dated my wife for two years before I even found out about her immigration status. I married her for love, not because of a status. She herself said she wanted to make sure she knew I loved her before she would even share it. But, as usual people are just racist and saracstic whenever I share this problem.

Yeah, she lied you all have lied too! and sure you have lied while you were in medical school. So get off your high horses, mention every lie in your personal statement too! yeah you won't because you're not caught. Why? because it doesn't discredit somebdy's entire life!

I also love how everyone is an immigration lawyer too whenever you talk about this lol "Oh that takes years" "Oh she can't be legal" you ignorant *****s. Actually, it wasn't even her decision to come to America it was her parents and her parents decision to over stay their visas. She was a little girl, what is she going to travel back home and take care of herself? lol NO! Why don't we lock up the whole family of a serial killer b/c their father, mother or sister was one? why don't they all suffer ? because we believe everyone makes their own decisions. My wife is an Amserican, and probably more pratriotic than any of you! she tried three times to enlist in the military after 9/11. Did any of you do that? HA!

Anyways, my wife is resilient and has always been. She is actually in a better position than any of you. Se has zero student debt after going to Columbia b/c she paid out of pocket and has zero Medical school debt b/c ot's out of pocket. She will get in and I'll be sure to shove it down your throats when it does.

Actually I wasn't asking any of you for legal advice. For the looks of it I wouldn't even want medical advice lol I pay a very good and qualified lawyer for that. Your wife should be kicked out of medical school. She lied. Not a little white lie. A big fat, stinking lie. What she did is an insult to the thousands of students, both internally and abroad, who did the right things and are sitting on the sidelines while your wife selfishly lies her way through life.

Beyond that, someone who would pull a stunt like that has no business taking care of patients. She demonstrated zero professionalism, and I wouldn't expect her to show any when actually taking care of patients. She has shown that she puts herself beyond all other considerations.
