I am curious to hear examples of those who have already paid off or are in the process of paying of their student loans. How much did you owe? How quickly are you paying them off? Are you receiving loan forgiveness through your employer/the government? How much were your payments during residency?

I am an MS2 interested in Psychiatry. My estimated loan burden will be $170,000, which I am hoping to pay off less than three years after residency. It is tempting to explore higher paying specialties after looking at my loans, so hearing success stories would be very motivational for someone in my position!

One thing to consider is that there are a lot of good psych jobs that would qualify for PSLF. VA, California Prisons, State Hospitals, Academia, CMHC's, your own non-profit office, etc. TONS of options. Something to think about.

good options if you are ok with paying as much interest on student loans as possible.....I'd be shocked if the govt ends up eating all that money on people who make 200k and above. We'll see when high income earners actually start applying for plsf in several years when the first are due......my guess is within the first year there will be a few examples that catches the medias attention and they put reasonable caps on it(and no it won't spare those already doing it....that's not the way it works)
