earlier last week i had a sit down with my financial aid and academic affairs advisors about repaying student loan debt. i know that im not unlike everyone else that has to carry the 100K+ burden. im honestly scared to death to think of what my final education costs will be once im done with school and add on all other loans i had before d-school (all together 280K+) YIKES!!! some of my classmates have joined armed forces repayment programs, and say it is working out fine for them. im seriously giving some thought to other programs where i could serve under-privilaged areas.

have any of you done these types of repayment programs or know of people that have? how has it worked out? can you suggests some info resources where i could learn more about it?

The National Health Service Corps has a loan repayment program. You have to work in an underserved area from their list for it. The website is http://nhsc.bhpr.hrsa.gov/ The indian Health Service also has loan repayment. I am currently on scholarship with the National Health Service Corps and know of a couple people that decided to do loan repayment. It seems to be a good program. Let me know if you have any questions about it.

I haven't read the details on the site, but what is the allowance for repayment per year? I've seen some allow only $30k/year or so.

I was just on the IHS website and it says up to 24K a year with a min of two years of service. On top of that some jobs with the IHS will give you an additional 24K a year. However, on there job vacancy list only one job in OK will give you that extra cash. I still have a question. On top of the loan repayment what salary will a dentist in the IHS program receive?

I'm guessing not much of a salary above the $24k/yr. Maybe $30-40k/yr on top of the repayment. I'm guessing though. Before jumping on this I would check all the details first since they will send you packing to the most rural of rural areas most likely. There's a good chance you will find an opportunity that will give you better compensation and not force you to live in the middle of nowhere. Just my 2 cents.

With the IHS your salary does not include the loan repayment. You also get allowances that are non taxable if you do the program through the public health service. I would recommend that route because the benefits are great. I think they said the salary was around $60,000 plus loan repayment and allowances for things such as housing.

That's not too bad then, especially if it's your first year out.

thanks for the info & the link to the site. this is at least a start for me 😀

GTchick:

Do you happen to have an idea what the average salary is for a new dentist on the National Health Services Corp scholarship program after they graduate and begin to payback their committment time? And have you had any problems with them paying your fees, books, equip, etc.? Thanks, from a fellow Southern in SC.

National Health Service Corps salaries are worked out with the center you will be working at so they can vary widely depending on the area of the country you are in. Most of the openings say that salary is locally and natioanlly competitive - whatever that means. They tell us that we should expect between 65,000 - 90,000, but i have heard of people getting more than this. One of the openings I looked at in Shreveport wants to pay their new dentist $65,000 + DOE + great benefits. I don't know what DOE is so I don't really know how much you would really be making there.

I just saw your pic on Intranet....havent seen you around school.....

I am at school. A lot. I just don't like the cafeteria.
I still would like to do the MPH program because you need an MPH to get into most of the Dental Public Health residencies unless I want to do a really long one in Boston. I just haven't gotten around to finding out if I can still do the program. You seem to be one of the only people who knows anything about it.

Can you please explain a little more about Dental Public Health residencies? What are they and is there any type of web site to find out more about them?

Dental Public Health is one of the dental specialties. The website for the programs is http://www.aaphd.org/ . The residencies are usually one year if you do them full time and you need a dental degree and an MPH for all but 2 of the prgrams and those programs are longer. People in dental public health work to unite communities and government to make the dental health status of the community better. There are three parts: compiling data and doing research, legislature and program planning, and program implementation. I would like to work on the program implementation and maybe some of the legislature. Let me know if you have any more questions.
