What do students do during the summers? I assume that you are off during the summers or is this not the case? Maybe the first two years and then straight through?

It varies by school, but I don't think anyone gets off more than the summer between MS1 & MS2.

You can do research, remediate classes, work, shadow, travel, or just relax.

Like Dr. Mom says, it varies by school. At KCUMB, we get a full summer vacation after MSI year, although if you want to, you can do a preceptorship. MSII year goes from early August until the end of the following July. We had about a month off before MSIII clinical rotation began, and these go all the way to next August, when I think we have a few weeks off. MSIV year starts again in September, and ends in May. No such thing as summer vacation after that!

Thanks guys. I'm just trying to formulate my plan of attack....

At LECOM-

We had the whole summer between MS-1 and MS-2 off (which was from the middle of May to the beginning of August). I did absolutely nothing that summer, and it was wonderful to just relax. We get a whole 3 weeks off between the end of MS-2 and MS-3 (we got off the second week of May and our rotations started in the first week of June), but we were studying for boards, so it didn't really seem like time off. Between MS-3 and MS-4, we had two weeks off. The rotations are scheduled differently now, with people having their time off during different months. So some people may not even have any time off between MS-3 and MS-4.

Just a perspective from another school 🙂

Oh, and I forgot to mention that at the end of MSII year and before our summer session began (basically most of May and the first week of June), we had about a month of study time to prepare for COMLEX and USMLE, but I can guarantee you that few of us considered that "time-off".
