Hey all,

I'm a current first year and I'm having a difficult time figuring out my "study style". I've been typing notes/taking notes on my ipad for class so I usually just study from those or type them in a Word document in a study guide/notes summary format. I've tried notecards but they take so much time and I never end up using them because it takes so long to write everything on them.

I have Bs and Cs right now...and I really want to do well on finals (which are coming up soon!). For this semester, I just want to pass (a C or higher - I know I won't fail any classes this semester) but I want to get new tips so I can use them to ace all my future classes.

Do you guys have any good study tips? How do you study? Any recommendations on how to retain information better? Any other tips on how to succeed in optometry school?

Thanks for helping! 🙂

In my opinion, the best way to study is to make sure you understand what you are studying and are not simply memorizing it. If I find topics that I do not understand, I either read it in the textbook, research it online, or talk to the professor or TA for that course. If you understand something, it will make it easier for you to retain that information.

I hope this helps!

How did you study in undergrad? With visuals; audios?
More importantly, are you getting these unsatisfactory grades and missing questions because you don't understand the concepts? Or are you simply not retaining material that you're studying because there's too much?

I found success with group review sessions for more conceptual courses. With classes that required memorization, I did the more tedious process of writing out formulas/important concepts and keeping up with the material instead of overwhelming myself by studying the last minute.

I don't think there's an easy "fix all" solution, but finding a good group to review key concepts the night before the test always helped...it also forced me to not procrastinate as much since I wanted to be prepared for them. Good luck!
