I'm starting off with Internal Med, the Family Med. Do you think I will have time to study for the board? Will the knowledge I gain on these rotations help me on STEP 1 exam?

Probably will help more for step 2. You can make time to study but it'll be a balancing act depends on if you want to do better in your rotation or on the boards.

I knew people who opted to do Internal Med before they started board study, but they all definitely had a dedicated month or two for board study after they finished the rotation.

Yeah I agree. It most likely will not help you as the focus on Step 1 is not quite the same as a medical rotation. Step 2 it may help.

In my school, I have to take and pass step 1 in order to start my 3rd year rotations. It is a requirement. If I don't pass I have to take time off to study and retake it.

It MIGHT help your USMLE step 1 score. Doing a clinical rotation would help you grasp clinical concepts and perhaps train you how to think when presented with a set of signs and symptoms. HOWEVER, the gain is minimal. It's best to take Step 1 right after you finish your basic sciences so that they're still fresh in your mind. Don't forget that step 1 is still a basic sciences exam. It tests basic science concepts through a clinical approach/presentation. So to sum up what I said, doing a rotation will give you a "clinical sense" that may help your score, but in terms of knowledge, everything you need to know for step 1 you should have already studied in your first 2 years.
