how long did you guys study for the step 2cs? what books did you use? i'm just beginnng that adventure...

1) A couple of hours. I don't think that this is a test that you can really study for. My biggest fear was that I'd get nervous and forget to do common, basic stuff.

2) First Aid for Step 2 CS. That's all you need, really.

Call me a dork, but I studied 10-12 hours over two weeks. I was not all about making a $1K mistake. Anyways, I think doing the cases from FA for Step 2 CS with a partner was helpful.

I agree. I think studying with a partner helped me pass. Otherwise, you can't get your flow down and really see how to save time and organize. It's all about time management and organization compared to knowledge. If you know the cases from First Aid and follow their advice , you should be OK🙂

I glanced through the First Aid book (but I didn't even finish half of it). My CS test had very basic/common complaints. You shouldn't need to study for it... you should know all this stuff by the time you're a 4th year.

bump...

just curious - I'm taking CS right after CK (2 days later) - and have been spending all my time studying for CK...

anyone else do okay with studying like 1-2 hrs per night for like a week???

I studied for 5 mins a night over a period of a month.

Results still pending.

There's not that much to do it. I'd say a thorough history including as full a review of systems as possible is important.

Physical exam has always been my weakness so I glossed over that.

Always be sure to arrange for follow up and address questions. Regarding counseling, I kept it to the generic "We're going to run some blood tests and do some imaging studies." I hope that's thorough enough.

And then complete the note (which I never have too much difficulty with)

I'm taking a year off for research, as is one of my roommates. We were afraid 4 months off the wards would make us rusty... to the tune of $1100 in the hole rusty. We practiced with each other going through the long cases in the step 2 first aid book. Read through the 'mini cases' which are great for quick differentials.

I think it went swimmingly, but I'm glad we prepared. Probably 10-15 hours total.
