Hi,
I'm looking to get some studying done before actually starting a Kaplan review course for the DAT. Thing is, I can't find good material. I bought that fat Kaplan book but it seemed pretty cursory to me, so I went ahead and bought the ExamKrackers books. They're so colorful and whatnot and I feel like I'm actually learning/remember this stuff. Question though, is this a good way to prepare? I mean, ochem is ochem right? Or do the MCAT and DAT test differently?

I just took the dat and I have to say one of the best review material for the dat has to be dat destroyer. Ochem is very straightforward and if you know this section on the dat destroyer or kaplan then you'll do awesome. I also bought the examkracker general chem book and I have to say that it did not help me at all. Topscore and dat achiever are very good also.

Good for you for prepping for your prep course! 🙂

You are going to find that there is someone on this site has used a combonation of just about every piece of material out there. My advice? Read through a few threads... Perhaps take a free online test to see what your strengths are... then pick the study guides that will help you in your weaker areas. Here is what worked for me:

I took the Kaplan course and reviewed just from the big book (and referred back to my testbooks for things I needed additional clarification on) for about 2 months (it has been a long time since I took some of my science classes!) (BTW... You sound like you may be a visual learner... Draw pictures of EVERYTHING, and hang them up! Pathways, reactions, you know... all the fun colorful stuff! That way you'll look at them everyday, you'd be surprised what may show up on test day!) Kaplan teaches strategy for the PAT and for the RC... which to me, was priceless.

However, I needed more test-like questions covering the sciences/math. So after I found this website, I ordered the DAT Destroyer. I think each has their strengths... However, as far as a good "drill-down" study apporach goes for the sciences/math... Desroyer has got it.

Good luck!

Definitely get the DAT Destroyer, if u don't u are doing urself a big disservice. Destroyer has everything u need to get 25's in gchem and ochem. I would get the Schuam's bio book which is a great addition to ur Bio studys. Also get achiever and topscore to practice timing and pat. Besides that know Destroyer and take a lot of practice tests. Do all that and u will do great

I thought ExamKrackers Bio was great for systems.

I wouldn't recommend using it as a stand alone guide, but if you don't have the time for something like Campbell, then it is really nice.

There were some topics covered well in Examkrackers that I didn't find covered else where, such as stuff about bones. I liked that. It seemed to complement Destroyer well for systems, especially.
