Stupid question? NSU or UMDNJ?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well umdnj people use RU gym. Which is like a 1.5 mile away from school. and dont get me wrong you wont get time to work out while you go to d-school.
+ if you like like couple blocks away from school you need to watch your back when its dark. and never go into the subway station near njit as it is the closest one to your school. its kind of dangerous when no one is there.

actually here is the email that i have received recently regarding that subway station:

So yeah other than that if you are in groups it is very safe. If you have a car dont be a cheap a90 and park it on the street; buy a parking pass and park it in a garage or gated community. or in society hill it seems pretty safe.

Regarding this to do: new york is 20 mins away by train... and as you know there are a lot of things that one can do over there... on the weekends if u are loaded you can drive to south jersey which is like 1.3 hrs away and try your luck at the casinos. and they have a beach there where people tend to surf in the dirty discolored water...

another email i tend to delete these but some have gotten away and here are the ones.

Follow up investigation revealed that the knife point robbery that purportedly occurred in the Central High/Campbell alley was a false report. Nothing occurred and the reporting person's injuries were self inflicted.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, you are still urged to choose well-lighted, busy pathways and streets and avoid alleyways or "short cuts" through isolated areas.

the funniest thing happened couple years ago when i was working in one of these schools. A guy told his friend at starbucks at school X to watch over his laptop. and his friend was reading something and lost track of the laptop. This guy just walks in unplugs the laptop and takes it with him. THE FUNNIEST PART WAS on his way out he was holding the door for the dean of the school... and they had like a little 1 min. conversation lol... saw it on the camera after all this occurred.

Luck was on the kids side... he actually brought the laptop and was running the trial of lojack software and the guy got caught.

Any ways UMDNJ OVER Florida UNIV. any day.

this is THE ONLY REASON THAT I HAVE POSTED THESE EMAILS TO LET YOU GUYS KNOW that be carefull...

you might get a better response in the Dental Forum from dental students attending these schools.

you're only young once, get out there and try something new and go to UMDNJ

So - they just put a YMCA inside of the UMDNJ medical bldg. (about 30 feet from the D school) - I've managed to get there at least 3 times a week even with our crazy schedule. As far as sports - I'm know there are clubs you can join that play in Central Park - but believe me, you are not going to have time to do too much playing!

The Newark area isn't very safe and I know the kids in the dorms definitely seem pretty trapped at the school. You can always live off campus in Jersey City or Hoboken - the commute via train or car is not too bad. Good luck with your decision!

thanks livineasi...

do you enjoy being there? are the students generally happy? what's it like living there? how are you weekends? would I have time to drive to say the rutgers pool and swim some laps maybe twice a week?

im swaying towards ummdnj though... when i was there all the students seemed happy to be there...

If all the students that you saw were happy, you probably didn't see enough students. This isn't just limited to UMDNJ though, but to all dental schools - a solid portion are not happy or bubbly, but it's mostly because of stress.

Weekends at UMDNJ are highly dependent on getting far off campus towards Hoboken or NYC. When someone says these places are close, you are looking at a 40+ minute commute each way. Around the school itself (aside from a few OK restaurants), there isn't much in the way of nightlife that students can enjoy regularly. Living in Newark is like living in any other inner city - just mind your surroundings. Walk around toting an iphone, and you may well be walking home with without one - it's really no different than cities like Philadelphia or Detroit.

Hoboken is a 20min car ride, probably 40 if you are commuting during rush hour, but if you are going to hoboken its probably will be at night unless you live there. You can also avoid the driving and take the PATH Train there.

The kids in the dorms seem trapped? What do you mean by that?

I don't go to umdnj.. but I do have a lot of friends that do go there and dorm...additionally I grew up in hoboken.

My friends at umdnj also complain they are "trapped" because it's hard to get out (going for a walk/run) when you're stressed... so most of the week they end up in their rooms. They do have cars so on the weekend they can leave to go home, to the city, etc. Someone mentioned the PATH train, I've heard umdnj offers a shuttle to the path. From newark penn station (path station) to hoboken is 20 minutes and then to the city 25-ish.

Okay that makes sense. Thanks for the input. Yeah, they do have a shuttle that goes there IIRC.
