I got a lovely present yesterday in the form of malware that keeps telling me I have malware and need to download their program to remove it. I think I actually have 2 programs- something called Spyshredder and another called Vista Antivirus.

Anyone have the solution to get rid of this crap?

I've tried Windows OneCare, AVGfree, the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, and searching on my own for the files to delete.

This is what I get for googling porn. Sigh.

try sunbelt software's counterspy

its the most amazing anti-whatever software ive come across, you can download a fully functional 15 day trial (just to clean up ur computer)

http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Home-Home-Office/Anti-Spyware/Download/

download, install, update the virus definition file and let it to a full system scan (will take like 2 hours)

if that doesnt catch it you're screwed

This is why you shouldn't use IE for any web browsing. That's why Steve Jobs made Safari for Windows. "Private browsing" for the win!

Shouldn't be a big problem. Counterspy is decent but I would HIGHLY recommend two programs to clean your computer, especially since it's likely you have other "things" on your comp. 1. Superantispyware (download at www.superantispyware.com) is a fantastic program, despite the odd-sounding name; and 2. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware or (google "MBAM" for short) is another one that's getting great press in the security world. Both are free and can literally clean just about anything off a virus-infested computer. I've recently gotten really into computer security and I tend see these mentioned as excellent, FREE antispyware apps that clean well...plus I use them routinely to ensure my own comp stays clean.

Three quick tips to keep you safe: 1. run a NON-administrator account!! 2. keep you AV and windows up to date; 3. Use an alternative browser like firefox or opera

If you're interested in more tips to help protect you, especially if you venture to the dark-side of the web, PM me and I'll gladly come back and post. Hope this helps.

The irony is that I used to use Firefox, then I sent my baby off to get the keyboard replaced and the OS was reinstalled and I just never got around to reinstalling Firefox. I am so dumb.

Thanks for the advice, guys.

These worked great- Superantispyware cleaned some but not all, and MBAM took care of the rest.

Thanks so much for the info!

Getting a mac is a quick solution to ending your pain with Windows.
