Hey ya'll

I am a 3rd year at a top 20 california school, with loads of research with publications and good 3rd year evals, however I had family stuff going on during STEP 1 and did horribly bad <200.

Are there any cali schools I could possibly get into? Also, how do I find a list of the cali residency programs.

Thanks a lot,

Josh

Non-military CA programs:

UCSF
UCLA
UCSD
UC Davis
UC Irvine
Stanford
USC
Loma Linda
Cedars Sinai
Harbor-UCLA

I think that's it. Cedars and Harbor are likely the least competitive.

Go rock Step II!

i know you want to stay in cali, do some rotations, rock step two, but also cast a little wider net. i am not saying you can't stay in cali at all, i am just saying apply lots of places-- don't limit yourself.

What do the easier of these programs usually "cut off" their step 1 scores at?

Know its one of those repeated questions, but really dont know..

I don't know the exact scores, but I know of people with below average scores getting interviews at USC, Irvine, Loma Linda, and Harbor.

The folks at Cedars seemed to think that the two digit score was a percentile, so they might even interpret a passing border-line score as "75th percentile."

Hi Josh,

I agree that you should definitely look at more options outside of california, considering its competitiveness. I had an ex-girlfriend who had step I scores < 200 a few years back, and she had a terrible time getting interviews. I was on a residency admission committee at a california school for anesthesia for a little bit, and I can tell you that sub-200 scores were not considered, unless the candidate had connections or did something big research-wise.

I don't mean to get your hopes down, just trying to be realistic here. The problem is that there are so many candidates who on paper look very strong, and it's so hard to distinguish between them, that virtually any criteria was used to narrow down the list, top among them the Step I score. Step I is a pretty stupid way of narrowing down a rank order list, but there's really not much to go by, and the truth is that the list is determined rather arbitrarily.

That being said, you definitely still have a chance. Kicking butt on Step II, and doing well on interviews will help.

In your situation I would strongly suggest you ALSO apply outside of Cali...You should really be applying to atleast 30 places...apply far and wide.. there are tons of 'easier' programs over in eastern states as well. it's all about what you want more...living in Cali or getting an anesthesia residency. Not trying to discourage you from staying in Cali...but I think you should apply EVERYWHERE.

yeah. stay positive, do aways, apply widely. remember it is only a few years and you will still be an anesthesiologist, which rocks....even if you have to do time in a place you don't love.
