I have my ERAS ap all ready to go, except the usual outstanding LOR. However, my first paper (3rd author) is due to be submitted shortly thereafter- hopefully a week after, but anytime up to the submission deadline of 9/15. Should I wait till then? I have no control over the submission date, as that's up to the first author. I have no other publications, and the experience leading up to the paper is, for all intents and purposes, my only research. The journal is not very high impact, but it is a big one for the subspecialty I hope to eventually enter.

Submit on 9/1. You can always update later.

Second this.
As you yourself said, you have no controll over when the manuscript will be submitted. If you decide to wait, I am willing to bet that it won't be ready for submission even by then.

However , you CANNOT update your ERAS CAF later, though you can definitely talk about it during interviews, or update them about it in your post interview communication with the programs.

Along the same lines, does it make a difference if one submit 9/1 or a week later? I will be ready to submit 9/1 but my few remaining LORs will be ready by the end of the week. I've heard some say that PDs are more generous with granting interviews when review the earliest set of applications. Any truth to this?

So, after we submit our application, we can still change assigned LOR writers for each program? Thanks!

If the paper is really due 9/15, there is no harm to waiting. If there are further delays, you can always submit in later Sept without any problem.

As mentioned above, you cannot update your publication section of ERAS.

no, and no.

Yes. You can always change your LOR assignments. If you do so before an LOR is uploaded, then I'll never know a switch was made.

Problem is that with the Step2 Ck score delay till Oct 7th wont be certified till then, will applying with only these cred on Sept 1st mean that my application wont be reviewed till then!?

Depends on the program. Some require ECFMG cert for an interview, some require it only for ranking. Some will wait for your STep 2 results. Some may offer you an interview, then if your Step 2 is not good enough may decide not to rank you, but will not cancel your interview (to avoid hurting your feelings, or to avoid any possible legal/financial responsibility for your non-refundable travel costs).

There isn't anything you can do about it.

Thanks alot Prog Director for your kind reply!!

So I should just apply on Sept 1st to programs that dont require a ECFMG certificate & wait till October to apply to programs that require it (I will get rejected outright if I apply to ECFMG requiring prog before hand, if I understand you correctly.)

Is it true that programs recieve STEP scores automatically within 1 week of examination even tho it takes 3 weeks for the results to be available to applicant?

No, that's not what I was trying to say. If I require ECFMG certification, I simply set my application filter to "block" all applications without ECFMG certification. They all stay in "limbo". Each time I access the postoffice, the applications update. If one of the ones in limbo becomes ECFMG certified, it will automatically show the next time I look for active applications. So, if you apply to programs that require ECFMG before interview, your app is likely to sit in a "limbo" bin until your ECFMG becomes finalized. So, you can really apply any time you want.

I have no idea. I would hope that the person taking the test would be the first to know. Would really suck to get an email from one of your programs stating that "due to your recent failure of Step 2, we have decided to recind your interview" before you actually knew.

And, with that, I have created endless fodder for SDN student nightmares.
