I am junior at University of Western Ontario in my bachelor science of nursing. Nursing has been great but my dream is to be a dentist. I chose nursing for the hands on experience, however, it has only provided with three full year electives so I have overloaded taking more classes to fulfill prerequisites for dental school. I am taking Ochem this summer which runs from the beginning of May to end of June, can't fit that one in. I am planning on taking the US Dat at the end of August so I have sufficient time to study. So my question to you is should I submit I application at the beginning of June putting trusting I will ace the DAT, or should I wait until the end of August just to be sure but will be a late applicant. I currently have an overall 3.63 gpa, sgpa 3.63 and BCPgpa 3.73. What should I do? Thanks for reading.

It takes approximately a month or two months for your application to process at the schools you select. If you apply in late August, the schools may not see your application until late October and that can put you at a disadvantage, esp since you're an international student. My advice would be to apply in June and take the DAT when you're ready and comfortable in August. Your application will remain incomplete until then but at least the schools will already have it by the time you take the DAT (scores take about two weeks to process).

Good luck.

If I were you I would apply June to only my top schools (remember you get 5 free or something like that)...then I would take the dat and then depending on how I did, I would add more schools to my app.
Whatever U do, don't apply late in August

You dont get anything for free you pay the same AADSAS $75 fee per school.

I think late July is the latest for an early application! Get everything ready and sent before ur DAT, ur transcripts, letters, personal statement, etc, so that when u finally take ur DAT it would be the only thing ur missing. Try to take it a little bit earlier!

I'm applying this 2012 cycle and I can tell you that applying early makes your life wayyyy better. My application was completed in July 26th. I still got (quite a lot of) interviews (all post-december), one acceptance so far. But the waiting game is so painful (due to low priority and more competition).
P.S: also, my stats are about the same as yours, relatively good DAT.

THIS.
My application was complete in July and I had friends who submitted in June. They got interviews before I did which made the waiting game even worse.

I did the same thing (wrote the DAT after I applied). Once I had hit submit on AADSAS and spent so much money, I was much more motivated to ace the DAT. After paying so much (I applied to alot of schools) I just couldn't let that money go to waste. I'm sure you'll be equally motivated if u do the same.

This is where people screw up! Take your DAT earlier and submit your application in June! It doesn't matter if you get an awesome score if you're late in applying. I had a friend get a 23 but didn't have his application in early. He didn't get in anywhere. I only got a 19 but applied in June and I got a December 1 acceptance. Take it for what it's worth.

Listen to his words. I took the DAT late late July, had my file completed in mid August, and ended up with post dec interviews ( read toothaches excel file on how much of a disadvantage your at by interview post dec). Definitely take DAT by June the latest and have your completed app send out in the first 2-3 batches (read how others taught themselves ochem). June applicants have at least 2 point DAT AA advantage on August or later applicants.

I'm also planning on taking Ochem and write the US dat in case my canadian results turns out to be not so good. On the ADA website however, it says completion of one year of Uni w/ Ochem, Gchem and bio is required for permission to write dat. Does any one know if you get rejected to write it before you actually complete them or do they still let you write it if you're in the process of taking Ochem?

They don't ask if you have taken all of the pre-requisites and they don't require you to submit transcripts or anything that proves that you have taken the courses. So technically, anyone can take it as long as they have a dentpin. There are people who take the exam while taking Ochem or prior to starting Ochem II.

I applied in June and wrote July 30th this past cycle. I was just banking on the fact that I would do good enough.. and I did. So I would suggest the same for you. Once my DAT scores got to the schools it was probably a month or so until I got interviews (September). Good luck!
