So I have recently decided to apply to osteopathic school because I did research and worked for an osteopathic doctor. I have a 26Q on my MCAT, 3.6 GPA from UCLA, and a 3.45 science GPA. Is it too late to submit my primary application? Is there any chance that I could still get in? Thank you guys for the input.

The deadlines for some schools have not passed; check out www.aacom.org for specific deadlines.

I would be prepared to answer these questions if you get interviews: "Have you applied to Allopathic schools?” "Why are you applying so late?” and "Why do you want to be an osteopathic physician?”

I think if you can answer these questions well you might be okay. Of course, the question on everyone's mind at this point late in the game probably will be 'is osteopathic medicine just a back up and if so will you be a proud Osteopath and represent our profession well?'

i did apply to allopathic schools, but this was before I knew anything about osteopathy. After talking to a D.O., I realized that my perspective on medicine coincides better with the osteopathic philosophy. But I totally understand that they will see it as a back-up. Too bad, I only now found out. The truth is...I want to help people through medicine and a doctor is a doctor. You choose the way you want to practice when you actually become one. In the end the two degrees are very similar. I would be happy with either degree as long as I'm practicing medicine. Thanks for your help!

That sounds like a good reason and you should use it at your interviews, as long as you can show them that you are sincere in that I think you will do fine. Don't let anyone bring you down you can make it.

I just submitted my AACOMAS app Dec. 12. In fact I opened a thread titled almost exactly as yours when I did it! 🙂 Most schools' deadlines haven't passed yet, but I would hurry because a couple are Jan 1, so you don't want to miss that. But even so, there are several with Feb, March, and April deadlines, so you still have time. Good luck.
