Success rate at SOAPing into intern year?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't have numbers, but from what I've heard it seems like you can scramble into prelim surg. Better than having no pgy1.

I believe there are a couple of old threads on here by people who were unable to SOAP into any prelim positions. I would say it is possible.

Yes you would, you would not have completed the pre requisites (completion of PGY-1) for your advanced spot.

Crap. That's the scariest thought I've had in regards to the radiology application process. Related note, how many prelim programs do people usually need to rank?

My question is, if you are applying to multiple fields and end up in the above situation, would your status on the Monday of match week say something along the lines of "matched to advanced position, did not match to pgy-1"?

Would they tell you that you have matched to the adv position or just that you failed to match to a pgy-1 position?

They tell you that you matched advanced but failed to match an intern year.

On that Monday they also tell you the city you matched so you can try to soap into a program nearby incase you care about that.

Worked with an intern last year that told me he had to do this.

Ohh really, surprised I never heard about that. If they tell you the city then some can basically figure out where they matched, I had no idea!

If you had to soap a prelim, I imagine people with an advanced spot secured are more desirable to prelim programs than someone who went completely unmatched and will probably need time to interview again next year?

My SOAP experience last year was unique, but with some scant similarities to the question you are asking. Take it for what it is worth.

Basically, last year (2014-2015) I was in a general surgery prelim spot trying to re-apply for ortho. I didn't match, but I also had a high interest in rads so I went for it in SOAP. Miraculously I got into a great program on the first round and am ecstatic about the result. With a gen surg prelim year almost finished I thought I would apply to an IM prelim year through SOAP just to be that much more well rounded. Long story short, I neither SOAPed into an IM nor a PGY2 prelim surgery spot, which surprisingly exists in decent numbers. Luckily in my case I already had the prelim year taken care of, but was amazed at my not finding another for PGY2 prelim spot to at least occupy the next year with more floor experience.

Another difference in my situation is that I didn't spend much time planning for this scenario...after all, intern year in any high-volume surgery program keeps you thoroughly busy. In your case you're going into it with a plan...I am assuming...which already sets you up for a more favorable outcome. Also, a PGY1 spot is going to be much, much, much more readily available to you on the SOAP list in the event that you have to take that route. Programs all over the country love the "extra labor" provided by having designated prelim spots up for grabs. Hopefully you won't have to worry about that come March. Just apply broadly and don't spend too much time stressing.
