I am wondering how many interviews I should look to complete in order to make sure I have enough for my ROL and match. I saw similar threads in the other fields but not here.

Background: MD/PhD in 7 years. Mult pubs though not in a surgical field. Top quartile of class--no AOA. Clinical grades: half honors (incl surgery) and half high pass. Honored my surg SubI as well. Strong letters from GS program director, clerkship director, chair. USMLE S1 240s. PS discusses desire to continue in academic medicine.

Im applying to almost all upper tier university based programs with a strong research component. Mostly east coast but a few in CA.

I applied to 30 programs total. I am wondering how many to do interviews at to insure my ROL will be long enough to match! I have a few interviews so far so thats good, but want to be able to schedule them smartly and not break the bank.

Thanks!

The reason you haven't found any here is that these questions are best placed in the ERAS/Match Forum, not the subspecialty forums. As stated in the Surgery FAQ, we don't know your chances and therefore, these questions are generally not answered here.

However, the NRMP's "Charting Outcomes for the Match" has the answer to your question. It lists average length of ROL to match by specialty. You'll find your answer there. Its as close as anyone can come.

Thanks! I have looked through that. Just so I am sure I am understanding when they show median number of contiguous ranks--that is referring to the length of the ROL?

I appreciate your help!

Thanks. According to the 2009 version 3 (http://www.nrmp.org/data/chartingoutcomes2009v3.pdf), the mean # of contiguous ranks for matched TY applicants is 2.4.

Is there something I am missing here? Why would applicants rank so few places for something as ridiculously competitive as a TY?

From this, am I to assume that, given that I have 4 TY IVs now, that odds are I will match?

Should I not bother scheduling many more TY IVs since all US Seniors with 5 or more contiguous ranks successfully matched (Chart TR-1)? That is, except for the 2 really weird US senior unmatched outliers with 16+ ranks.

Please help me wrap my head around this 🙁 😳

Not entirely sure, but I think the key word is "contiguous." I think the number is that low because most people had a mix of both TY's and prelim med programs in their supplemental rank lists.
