Saw a poster on display at ASA about Sugammadex... aside from having the most badass name since Rocuronium, anyone have some early thoughts on the future of this bad boy?

Well, you won't ever have to weigh giving a paralytic prior to ventilation anymore if it works that fast. Forget having to deepen a patient to supress respiratory effort just blast em with roc and reverse em at your leisure.

I also loved sugarsmmacks as a kid so this will be like old times.

depends on what they're going to charge for it. period.

example: aprepritant (Emend) costs $35/dose. i predict it will not catch on, except in the (relatively) rare cases of previoulsy known extreme ponv patients already identified as such.

i agree with vent. sugarsmacks were and still are a delicious part of my day. they have a catchy name and a taste that can't be beat. you can be sure that sugammadex will catch on for the same reasons.

the medical center i'm at was part of the trial. in talking to folks who used it, it was great. incidentally, they also tried it with vecuronium with same great results ( though im pretty sure they were breaking the rules by doing this since organon, the makers of sugammadex, also make rocuronium and therefore would prefer sugammadex be used exclusively with roc, boosting sales). though rocuronium has faster onset, from what i understand, vecuronium has lower incidence of alergic reactions.

roc's the shnizzle. I don't wanna sit there and ventilate my patient for 3 minutes waiting just for the vec to kick in if I dont have to. BUT If I could reverse the stuff maybe I could give an intubating dose of something nuts like 3 mg/kg and have it kick in approximately as fast as roc. then I could save a whopping 4 bucks!

Who cares about anaphalaxis. I got epi hangen around somewhere. Plus those CHF'ers love a whiff of epi!

Now they are just called "Smacks" because having sugar in the name is just not PC anymore. They're not fooling anyone though. Sugar is in such high content, you can smell it in your urine! I become a temporary diabetic if I eat that cereal.
