Hi all, I'm a first year Texas applicant this year, and have only received one interview (TAMU), at this point I'm not expecting anymore. Anyways, I don't think my interview went that stellar, so I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't get in. Right now I'm just thinking of ways I can improve my app for the next go around, and I was hoping you re-apps could help me out a little bit heh.
My cumulative GPA was a 3.33 at the time I applied (science around a 3.2 i think), had a 34N (10v 13p 11b), and was processed late september. I had a friend with similar stats receive a lot more interviews than I had, so maybe it was my late application that hurt me? My extracurricular stuff isn't that great either, just some volunteer work and doctor shadowing. So i was just wondering,
-what should i do in the current year that could improve my app? i was thinking about working part time as a CA at a hospital to get more clinical experience in, but im not sure if there are better things I could do to accomplish that. Maybe do some humanitarian stuff?
-Should I apply this coming may or wait a year until i can have more significant changes in my application? If i were to reapply in may i think the only changes would be a slightly higher gpa, and maybe some part time work as a CA. Even though I think that my late application was what hurt me the most, im not certain. Should I take some classes after my graduation in the following year to boost my gpa even more if i decided to wait?

Heh pretty much I'm clueless about what to do right now, and any input of any kind would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

how many schools did you apply to this year? there's still some time left in this app cycle for interview invites. also, i would try calling few schools you applied at after you get the final decision on your app about how to improve. some schools are very nice about it and will tell you excatly what was wrong with your app and what you can do to improve.
also if there's a school close by, you could even have an appointment to go over your app.

If I were you I would focus on the portion of the application where you felt you were the weakest. If your MCAT score was good (which a 34 is excellent), and you have some volunteer experience and shadowing (which you do), then I would focus on getting the grades up. That seems to be the major weak link in your application. You can accomplish this by taking Post Bacc classes or possibly taking more classes at the graduate level. These will be averaged into the overall GPA and could make a difference. If you don't hear anything and don't get in you are always at liberty to contact the schools directly and ask them what the weakness in your application was. I wouldn't worry about the "humanitarian stuff" but would focus on not repeating the same application you made this year. Best of luck and if you have any more questions feel free to message me directly.

I would call some of the schools that you haven't heard from and see if a decision was made on your app and you never know what might come out of it!! 😉
