Hello,

I am a pre-dent student and I am in the process of applying this summer. I will have my committee letter interview next Friday and I took the DAT on June 10th. I am planning on applying to Chapel Hill, East Carolina, Maryland, Louisville and VCU.

GPA: 3.968
SCI-GPA: aprox. 3.9 ( I have never taken the time to calculate it but I only got a B in bio lab and a B+ in Ecology, so it should not be much different from my overall GPA)

DAT
PAT:18
QR:17
RC:21
Bio:19
GC: 16 🙁
OC: 19
TS:18
AA:18

I have about 40 hrs of shadowing(still shadowing): (General Dentistry, Pediatric, Ortho and Oral Surgery)

I have 82 hours of volunteer service.

Also 40 hrs or research ( still continuing)

I am planning on submitting my application in about 3 weeks. I am also planning on retaking the DAT but that can't occur before September 10.
Am I wasting my money on any of the schools, for example would my application be immediately rejected by any of the schools listed above ? Should I still apply to all of these schools even with my mediocre DAT scores?

Constructive criticism is encouraged and welcomed. Fire away!

If North Carolina is your state of residence, I don't see why you can't just test the waters and apply to the Carolina schools. At the same time, do plan on retaking the test. I don't think your list is that bad.

Your stats look great, and you'll likely be given an interview at U of L based on what I had when I applied last cycle. However, I think you should get your application in as early as possible to give yourself the best chance of getting in with an 18 AA. This past year, it seems as though 19 AA was the score to get while trying to make sure that no sections were at or below 17. Honestly at this point, you can put aside your research and volunteer stuff and focus on the DAT, you've done the work. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply guys. I am planning on retaking it but it will be later in the cycle around mid September. How is Louisville, do you like it?

Louisville was a great school, everyone there was friendly and the students seemed to enjoy it but at the same time it was pretty expensive (roughly 25-30k/yr more than my state school).

Cost is a big factor, the ideal situation for me would be to go to either East Carolina or Chapel Hill, but if I didn't have a choice I would happily pay that(with loans of course).

How much did you study for your dat? If you felt as prepared as you could have been, I don't know about a retake. I would only want to score 22+ across the board if it's that late... I'm just not sure if it would be worth it.

i took a kaplan course but i didnt really study until 10 days before the exam and i studied 6 to 8 hrs a day.

for me the pat on the real test was much harder especially angle ranking and hole punching. so if I use another program i can improve that score.

Also, i can improve my GC bc during my test I did bio then ochem and left GC for last but, i had drank too much water and i had to go to the bathroom during the test and that took about ten mins.

I was really surprised by my RC score, cuz english is my second language and i read much slower than most people (may have gotten a bunch of lucky guesses)

If you use Chad's, Destroyer, and Crack DAT PAT through the summer, your scores should jump substantially for a September retake. Apply and put on the app that you're planning a retake.

Alright, that sounds good. Thanks for the advice.
