I had a question that asked "what is the highest risk factor for suicide in a 65yo alcoholic male who was recently divorced". The answer was age.

Does anyone know the order? I know that previous attempt should be #1 but don't know what comes next.

Someone asked you that? Geez.

I was taught that previous attempts and FHx were the top two risk factors, with substance abuse / divorce / advanced age / etc. being somewhere behind those two. We never made a big deal out of which was slightly more correlated than another.

We had something like that asked on our psych test. Crap imo.

I would have gone with alcohol.

Next would be gender, men of that age are a high risk group.

I've seen alcohol/drug abuse/violence quoted to be between age and gender (e.g. Lange Q&A). Being divorced (or single) would also be a risk factor but lower on the list than the rest.

In the UK we are certainly taught it would be gender, had it in an exam even.

1. Previous attempt
2. Male
3. Over 45
4. Divorced
5. Alcoholic

Oh that's complete bull. Highest risk factor there would've been alcoholism. Dr. Fadem confirmed this with us and she wrote the book.

BRS Behavioral Science in rank order:

1) Previous attempt
2) Age
3) Alcohol
4) Violent Behavior
5) Male

You might as well memorize this forever, I've had it tested >5x

... Damn it. And she wrote that, too. Go by the book then -_-

Surely it depends on the individual question. In certain age groups gender wouldn't be very high up the list but in the older age group, like the question the OP had it definitely would be. This doesn't seem to be a one size fits all kind of question.

Tell that to the NBME
