This brings up a VERY important question:

Was this updated to include Kal Penn's character on House?

Obviously not; Kal Penn isn't white.

Nice statistics, but what about the non-white/non-male part of the population?

Why to ppl always post about suicide????Or dental suicide? Seriously.

This data was taken between 1970 - 1995...I'm pretty sure professions that are tied to the economy have a higher suicide rates in 2009

Something to keep in mind is that these statistics are very old... I think suicide is the kind of thing that is probably profoundly affect my our socially constructed values. Our values are very different between now and 10-39 years ago. Suicides among dentists can be higher than physicians (I am not saying that they are, just saying if they were) due to various factor (though I don't have any statistics to back it up).

But, I would think suicide rates now are lower post 2000~ since we now have better drugs and therapies for treating suicide-contributing-factors like depression.

looks like now some of the pre-dental students are propagating the myth that dentists have the number one suicide rate.

its a long-standing myth that dentists have the highest suicide rate, its nothing new. its very hard to get accurate info on stuff like this, esp on small subsets of the population like dentists, but from the various numbers i've seen over the years, the only two conclusions you can really make are A. dentists and doctors have higher suicide rates than the general population B. doctors have a higher suicide rate than dentists. but its really pretty hard to try to determine any more than this.

also something to keep in mind, is that medical professionals live longer than the general population, so the increased suicide rate has little effect on the overall survival of the group, as the number of people who commit suicide is very low, even if its higher than average.

the numbers he posted don't say this.... i thought that was pretty obvious..

but yeah. a case size of 85 people who suicide doesn't have a great predictive power to estimate the real effect of the total population.
