Hey I was wondering what color suit you thought would be best for interviews. I have 2 at home, a black/gray with a thick orange/rust color stripe. I would wear an awesome rust/orange tie with it. Or I could go with a Blue gray suit with a thin purple stripe. I can wear either a pink and purple te or a white and purple tie with it. Any thoughts???

Honestly i dont think it matters as long as you look professional. I was told to be conservative with no vibrant colors or patterns. Ive been wearinig a straight black suit, suttle pin striped shirt, and a very traditional pattern tie. I also noticed at one of my interviews, a kid had his hair fully spiked like he was going to a club. I thought it was funny. I personally did not like it but who knows maybe he stood out.

I was also told that you should wear a plain whirt shirt for interviews with cuffs?

Interesting. At my interviews it's been the complete opposite where most everyone has been wearing black suits and only 1 or 2 have been in grey or blue. Honestly though I don't think it matters as long as you look professional. I'd personally stay away from anything too bright or flashy just because I'd rather stand out because of my qualifications not because of what I was wearing, plus most of the interviewers I've seen so far are from a much more conservative era than all of us!!

I wear a dark blue pinstripe suit, with either a light blue or white shirt. I was told that any other color of shirt wasn't professional. However, I've seen a lot of colors other than light blue and white at interviews.

Thin purple stripe wins, wear a white shirt and purple tie.

You can still look professional w/out wearing a blue/white/black combo.
EVERY guy at my interviews was wearing a black suit and a blue/white tie combo. Every single one. I opted for a charcoal suit and light pink shirt/burgundy tie or pale purple shirt/purple and black tie combo. Got compliments on both too 🙂

I also found that all black is not the way to go. I use a navy blue burberry suit with light patterns. Underneath is a light blue nordstrom shirt with a burberry tie. I was going to go with leather shoes with them but opted with black allen edmonds.

I personally think black pin striped with a white shirt looks classy and professional. Maybe that's old school though.

I'm thinking about going for the Presidential candidate look. Solid grey or black suit with a white or light blue shirt and plain red tie.

My ideal would be grey - white - red.

If you are referring to a french cuff shirt, waaayyy off. That would be majorly overdressed for an interview.

As far as other input, opinions on blk vs. blue vs. grey or whatever w/ shirt being too bold and whatnot. I think it doesn't matter. Look clean, professional. Recognize that it is the fall and so there is a certain style that goes with the time. Don't do much bright color action.

Personally I am against any pin-striping at interviews unless it is an extremely faint pin-stripe in no other color but grey.

You absolutely cannot go wrong with a charcoal colored suit. If those are the only two suits you have to work with, make sure you wear a shirt and tie combo that is not too busy.

if you want to look like the majority of guys I have seen at interviews, then by all means wear an all black suit. Personally, I think that, more often than not, they end up looking cheap, or that the guy has very little sense of how to dress in business attire. Think about it: if you have never owned a suit before, you're likely to buy a suit you think will be the most practical for almost any occasion, and usually the first-time suit shopper chooses black. Then when he wears the suit, it gives off the impression that it is quite a rarity for him.

My personal opinion is that you should go for a color other than black or charcoal grey. Get it tailored properly and don't be afraid to wear a shirt color other than white, and the result will hopefully be that you look comfortable dressing for business and wearing a suit, and you're not just buying for practicality's sake.

When did dental school interviews require "business" atire? Rather, you should dress "professionally." There is a difference between the two. The bottomline, my friends, is to dress in whatever suit that will make you comfortable and confident, so that you can perform/deliver to your best ability during an interview. This may be sticking to classic traditional colors or going with brighter colors--whatever you decide, there is no wrong answer. Just my thoughts.

I did straight Black Suit with a very presentable white button down with subtle Grey/black stripes and a nice navy blue tie to end it all.

It is preferred to put on a white button down.

but as for klutzy. go for the rust color combo. I saw this guy at my interview with this absolutely amazing green suit/blue shirt/blue & green tie. i LOVED it. 🙂 haha. but then again i like green. go for the one that looks good on you.

Say what you will about black suits, 99% of the guys at the last two of my interviews were in black suits. If this in any way looks 'cheap' as has been suggested, it certainly couldn't have much of a negative impact if almost EVERYONE is doing it.

On second thought, since when was black dress attire considered cheap?

though people knock black suit, its been the time-tested, traditional professional wear for years. old-fashioned? perhaps....but effective? definitely.
i personally don't like the traditional blue or white shirt. most people i've seen had jet black suit, white shirt, and then any color/pattern tie. there were very few with gray suits, and hardly any with blue. i'm a fan of charcoal, not exactly black, but not nearly gray. i also like different (yet plain) shirts like a lavender, cream, or light green. they're not your usual blue/white, but they also remain conservative colors. tie color/pattern is pretty much a free-for-all.

You dont need to be Mr. GQ for an interview. I bought a black suit from Bachrach freshman year for formals and Im not gonna buy a new one since i barely ever wear suits excepts dental school interviews. I dont thinks schools are going to give you admissions because of a good suit choice but i could see it looking negatively if you didnt meet the bare minimuims.

I did however buy a dark brown suit for prom as a joke. Maybe ill bust it out for an interview. I gurantee no one will wear a suit like that.

For interviews, I take off my suit jacket during breaks and such. Is that a no no? i mean it gets hot.

I like looking sharp and well dressed, so when I buy suits I but something that will get me a compliment when someone sees me in it, the same with ties and shoes. It is definitely very professional and extremely stylish yet it is not too loud. Next question is should i wear a patterned blue and white shirt or should i wear a formal white.

I'm amazed that people actually spent the time to discuss this topic at length... You're going to a dental school interview, not to become the poster boy/girl for Ralph Lauren or Armani... I highly doubt that your "sense of style or class" carries much weight at all with the adcoms as long as you're dressed professionally.

Quite frankly, someone might have excellent sense of style but is a college student who probably can't afford a nice stylish suit (unless mommy and daddy are willing to chip in), so who is anyone to immediately conclude that they don't have any "class".

Try channeling your time elsewhere... like researching the school(s) you'll be interviewing at. Guarantee you that the words that come out of your mouth, not the extent of the color schemes of your shirt/tie/suit combination, have a much greater bearing on your chances of acceptance than your appearance.

Baby blue suit with a hot pink tie and clown shoes. That should work.

There is nothing wrong with a black suit, especially if youre on a budget. This should be youre go-to, all-occasion outfit. In my opinion, your shirt/tie combo will make you stand out more anyway. Bottom line, this isnt runway model; just look professional.

Oh, and dont wear a 3-button suit unless youre 6'3" plus, otherwise you'll look shorter than you are! Anyway, good luck brother and spend the rest of your free time looking up questions for your upcoming interview!

i ask because my dad has recently switched from ties to bow ties exclusively, and has quite a collection. i wear them sometimes (church, weddings, award ceremonies, etc.) and always get a TON of compliments. they really can dress up a suit and make you stand out in a crowd, so i thought a bow tie may be a good choice for an interview. on the other hand, a bow tie may appear a little too formal or pompous...what do ya'll think?

I think im going to wear a somewhat fitted "jos a bank" charcoal with subtle pin stripes; white shirt with just a hint of pattern on it; and maybe a red/white diagnal stripe tie.

Bowties are okay for certain occasions, but I don't think they are considered a good choice for an interview.

I am always amused during interview season at what some applicants wear, and they are D4's. Black suit for guys, business suit for women. I come to work in a suit every day.
And make sure whatever you are wearing is pressed and fits correctly. It is not that I really care about your clothes, but a good presentation shows that you have thought about this interview and are taking it as seriously as I do.
