Summer Before Medical School

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I can't decide when to quit my job 2 months before school starts or 3? hmm tricky. I also have to go through a breakup with my SO or 3 years before I leave. I went to an OMM DO a few weeks ago for treatment and he told me to quit very soon and travel. The thing is I don't really want to travel alone though

Completely understand as I'm in the same boat. I don't even like going to a bar alone, I don't think I'd be able to travel alone.

What made you guys decide a break up was best before medical school? I have been with my girlfriend for 4 years and am starting to doubt if long distance is a good idea. I would like the support though if I'm struggling.

I guess I haven't completely decided. He wants to go with me where I go to medical school, but I honestly don't want the distraction of making sure he's satisfied. He's also applying for his masters that I wouldn't want to hold him back from, and I don't think I'll do long distance well. We're not broken up nor have we talked about it, but I'm definitely not planning vacations with him.
We've been together for 4+ years too, but I unfortunately don't see it ending well.

As some who had to travel 4000+ miles for my interviews. I know that better than anyone.
I forget you're from Hawaii. That must hurt. I got lucky, my only interview was only $160 round trip for my ticket.

Yep hurts pretty bad. For every interview I go to, a person on the mainland can go to three for the same price (unless across country, then maybe two). A $160 dollar ticket is making me drool.

Yea we have a service here in Springfield (Allegiant) that sells cheap tickets on Thursdays and Sundays. I think it's a weird small town airport thing.

I actually have heard of allegiant as well. They also do trips to Hawaii every so often, and the tickets are rather cheap as well.

Maybe I should take a vacation prior to school starting if I can get something cheap out there 😎

Yep. If you are the out doors type, there is plenty of things to do here (especially true for the outer islands).

Nothing wrong with that! I thought it would be fun to travel with a few pals somewhere this summer, but being in grad school, working jobs, or having limited funds restricts them to do so. I don't feel like traveling solo either.

Those who are thinking of Spain, I just got here! I'm in Barcelona. It's great so far. I recommend the trip if you have the money and time. Got Israel and then Italy next for about a month

Quit my job back in December after 6 years working at a hospital, very happy with that decision!

How long was this trip?! Sounds pretty fun! and how many states did you cross?

We started in Portland, Oregon On may 18th. The route was: Oregon - Idaho - Wyoming - Nebraska - Iowa - Missouri - Illinois - Indiana - Ohio - West Virginny - Pennsylvania - Jersey - NYC.. Rolled into NYC on July 12th. We stopped in Indiana for about a week where my fiance was doing PA school. Happened to fall on her birthday, so that was really nice. It was absolutely an incredible experience. I'll post a couple of photos when I get home, if you want. Oregon's Painted Hills were incredible. Wild buffalo grazing in a grass field with the snow-capped Grand Teton range for a backdrop is one of the more memorable visuals. Followed by a 10,000 foot mountain pass with a 35 mile long downhill on the other side 🙂

That sounds pretty cool. How much did you end up spending on food and lodging for the trip?

The airfare was about 450 to get from NYC to Portland. From there on we both probably dropped about 2k each. We could have roughed it more and probably gotten it down to below a thousand each, but we preferred maintained camp grounds. Some towns would let you pitch a tent for free in their parks, other times we'd just pull off the road and set up camp in the woods. Every now and then we'd stop at a motel. Arco, Idaho was one such stop, after 40 miles of strong headwinds. Then the following day we met a very nice gentleman from Idaho Falls who pulled over and handed us a GPS with the route set to his address. Wouldn't take it back, welcomed us into his home with his wife..

For food we liked to try local restaurants as we rolled through all the different little towns. Though, I'd say close to 75% of our meals were fruit and canned things we'd pick up along the way. A can of beans and some cottage cheese are cheap, but definitely get the job done.

The price tag is definitely very customizeable.. We've met riders along the way who were on the road for months on end with no income and no bank account.

My buddy and I rode across the United States on bicycles the summer before I started.. Now I'm in my third year and it's really sinking in that the trip was most likely a once in a lifetime experience going into this career.. I would strongly advocate doing something you may never get a chance to do again..
Physicians take sabbaticals sometimes, don't they? Also, there is always vacation. 4-6 weeks off a year isn't too difficult to arrange when your skills are in demand.

Barcelona is awesome! I wish I was you right now.

Throwing out my plans - I'm heading to Bonnaroo with two close friends June 11-14th, hiking and exploring CO for 7 days in July (red rocks amphitheater, anyone?!), and potentially taking a family vacation to Disney World sometime too (I'm the youngest in my family, but my older siblings have really young kids). My goal is to try to do a lot of little things that add up to a really awesome summer...would love to go to Europe though 🙂

Ultra in miami 😵, then Europe --> India --> Thailand --> Cali National parks --> Home --> New York for the next two years of slave labor in med school

Seriously, where on God's green earth are you guys coming up with this money?

I am working every day until my wife graduates from school in May and finds work. We then move to where I will be attending school and we swap, she begins to work and I begin school. Even with that plan there could be a 2-4 week region where neither of us are bringing in money, which I have no clue how that will work out.

We are pretty much right on the border of going broke every month so I have no idea how y'all are wrangling up money to go traversing to other countries and crap? I guess maybe if I was still in undergrad I couldve saved up some money from a refund check and/or part time job or something? Is that how yall are doing it?

For me it is long term saving, tax returns, lots of acquired airline miles, having family in Europe to visit and stay with and working 60 hours a week just to save up money for my trip.

Gotcha... I dont make enough that we can really save up anything. Our tax return is going to our move, and I have no family outside the country heh.

Looks like I am SOL haha...

I am planning on camping a few times during the late spring and early summer. Thats honestly probably how I would want it anyways. I would rather be in a tent along a lake than in a hotel any day.

The single life + low cost of living area + lots and lots of work at 2 well paying jobs + out of school + minimal debt from undergrad.

Haha basically my life could not be any more opposite, except for the out of school part.

I was just curious how people were doing it, but its all good. I would rather be poor and have the opportunity to support my wife than to go on grand trips. But hopefully 15 years from now I can both support my wife AND take her on grand trips 😉

Living with my parents and working full time has it's benefits $$$.

Also, I'm heading to "Fare Thee Well" in Chicago and doing as much Phish summer tour as possible.

I'm applying for 2016 start and plan to hike the A.T. March 1 - a week before school (assuming I actually get in).

Well it looks like I'm the only one working literally until school starts. School starts on a Monday and my last day at work is the Friday before. Have a Europe and Colorado trip planned though, gotta love that PTO!

Oh, I'd love to go abroad while I'm still young and save the U.S. for when I'm older. My grandparents have visited every state in their old age. If I do HPSP, I might let the AF pay for a short trip to Europe with a little dip into the sign-on bonus.

I have trips planned to Colorado, Utah, and China. And I may or may not tack on a trip to Isreal too. I saved a ton of money by accepting contract work for a summer in CA where food/rent was paid for, then moving back home to live with the rents and picking up a med assistant job that paid well. Also have family in China and friends in Utah, and the CO trip costs are split between five people. But I also graduated with no undergrad loans (combo of scholarships, parental help, and working full time during undergrad), and I'm super super frugal.

What are you guys' plans for the summer before medical school? I'm working on booking a week in Hawaii with my girlfriend. Maybe some other sort of vacation as well. If I do end up attending LMU I will be starting end of July. So I need to squeeze in as much summer as I can until then!

I think that sounds like a great idea, you should use your free time as you wish. Free time becomes valuable once you become a medical student, and its even more precious once you become a physician. Some schools also give you a summer break between the first and second year, that being said a vacation before school would be a good idea. I advise students to use that as well as much for personal use like vacations or visiting family and friends rather than on academic work.

AT is my goal too! I'm actually planning a southbound hike starting this June if i end up reapplying, but might still do a smaller section hike before fall if i get in this year.

I can't wait to quit my job . I've saved up $3000 to just coast through the summer and possibly travel or just read and be a bum.
