After 1st yr yes (~3 months, I think July, Aug, Sept)
after 2nd yr no

Yup, as Dat_student said. The first summer you get off. You can take NDBE1 after your first year so many people study for that during the summer.

many 2nd years are advising 1st year students to take the NBDE I during 2nd year, b/c the not everything is covered during the first year. but yeah, you can definitely use that 3 months for studying.

What topics do we have to self-study if we take it after first year?

Sorry, off topic, but do you guys know if we have to collect teeth for ucsf?

Yes you will need to collect teeth, but you won't need/use them until your second year (winter and spring quarter).

Some pathology, physiology, biochem, dental occlusion, and a few more courses that will not be covered during your first year BMS and PRDS courses. You will learn so much more your second year that will help reinforce material learned during the first year and throughout the second year. Plus, you will have more time during your second year to focus on the boards. Besides you can enjoy your last remaining summer doing something you really love than spend it studying for an exam.
