Hello all. I'm debating whether I should apply to some summer research opportunities for this summer. The only thing holding me back is that I have a full-time career in law enforcement that I don't want to resign from. Not yet, though. Any advice? I think research would enhance my med school application.

I wouldn't do it. Research is nice but not required. Money is much nicer.... If I had to do it all over again and it were at all possible, I'd have completed everything while in the previous job making good money, but my engineering job was too stressful and exhausting to do adequately and make good grades. Now, if you were quitting anyways and the research was paid then I can see a good situation.

Research is not required to get into medical school. Depending on which schools you plan to apply to will ultimately matter more. For example if you plan to apply to research focused schools then the lack of research on your application will be brought up. It is a nice experience to have but by no means is it a deal breaker.

Good luck!

I still feel like my med school application will be lacking if I don't do some real research to supplement it.
