so this is the time that most MS1's are making summer plans...

a lot of us are confused as to how important research is when applying for residencies...

furthermore we are wondering whether the research must be in the same field that we intend to do our residency in...

are there any senior medstudents or residents out there who could enlighten us???
 
Research may help, it will not hurt (unless you make up data about all them cloned babies, for example, but only if you get caught). Doesn't have to be in you area - I did peds research because I was going into peds at the time. I switched to IM in the meantime. If you want to go to a top 10 program, you probably need research to be really competitive but in general it only matters during your residency for fellowship applications.
