hello. does anyone know where or what private organizations offer scholarships/grants for dental students interested in doing summer research? thank you.

The NIH has a comprehensive summer research program for dental students. But it is not a private grant since the NIH is part of the government.

Here's the address for the NIH program, http://www.nidcr.nih.gov/research/student.asp. You've actually missed the deadline for this summer (it was Jan 15). You might want to check organizations like the Rockefeller Institute or the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. You can also always do a google search and see what you come up with.
