Hey guys,

I am currently a freshman, and I am pretty happy with the 4.0 from my first semester, but more importantly, I will be doing research at a medical school on Fridays and Saturdays starting this second semester until the end of my 4 years. I guess the only problem is that this is my first actual research experience but I am really looking forward to it. However, I am planning out what to do this summer and I am really interested in applying for a research program as a freshman and I was wondering if you guys can provide me with some input. I was wondering what programs you may recommend that I should apply to or if you have any links, I would really appreciate your help.

Thank you.

NSF's REU might be okay as a freshman, and NIH will accept you if your motivated (ie. CONTACT PIs). u can always do your own research haha, well as long as your doing low cost studies, there are plenty out there.

try googling "SURP" and see if you find any programs you like. apply to as many as you can, since they are very competitive, and can be difficult to get as a freshman.

I shamelessly pimp out the NIH - I've been here since the summer after my freshman year. Its obviously a great experince to have on your resume. You can get an internship here IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUS SKILLS. Seriously, thats what gets ppl in the door. Everyone has a good GPA. Any summer program knows they have only 10 weeks with you. They don't want to spend half that time training you. So list ALL of the skills you learned at your current internship on your application - then try to get in contact with specific PI's. Ask your current research PI's if they have contacts at the NIH. Application closes on March 1, but a lot of labs start placing students in January.

Summer students are free to NIH labs, plus the labs get $$ to make up for the cost of materials the student will use.. So labs generally like having summer students. Plus you get paid and you get to hang out in DC for the summer. PM if you want to know more. Its really a great experience..

thanks, any other advice for those who have applied in the past as a freshman?

Thanks

fightingirish, stick at IUSB, it is the most convenient for you. for your first summer stay there and do research. I suggest you also take a summer school course perhaps a philo or theo you don't want to do during the year. Then I suggest your sophomore summer you do a SSLP, they are great. Then your junior year do your research again. I always feel it best to stay in the same lab so you have the greatest chance to publish, jumping labs won’t help you. Also if you are a ALPP you might want to do research in your major. If you need any advice specific to ND just ask.
