Has anyone heard anything about the summer research training program at UCSF? Is it a good program? Is it difficult to get into? Is it mainly for California students?

I'm assuming you've seen this, but just in case you haven't:

Eligibility criteria: http://student.ucsf.edu/summerprogram/applicants/eligibility_and_selection.html

It does not appear that you need to be from CA.

I work at UCSF in the Office of Research, so let me know if you have any questions about the school or the area.

I applied, it seems like a really great program. good luck!

I remember I inquired about this program (asking if we could choose to do clinical research under UCSF faculty) and they stated it was for those with PhD as a career goal and not MD... then they suggested programs that were more geared towards prospective medical students. This was a few years ago though.

is this the one with the 3000 dollar stipend?

Perfect if you have MSTP intents.

I was a part of the UCSF SRTP program last summer. The program is definately perfect for MSTP intents and Ph.D. students, but I would say that there were just as many (if not more) students in the program last year that were pre-med, pre-pharm, or pre-dent.
If you want to go to school there it definately doesn't hurt to say that you worked there and possibly get quite a good LOR since UCSF is loaded with the best of the best when it comes to research.
I really liked the program. Their new research campus is amazing. You can tell they have some funding flowing through there. You get free travel to and from, free dorm-style housing, and a free public transportation pass. You basically have to pay for food and entertainment with your $3000 stipend. I was pretty independent on my project and actually felt like a member of the lab and not 'an undergrad.' You present your research at the end with a poster session and a powerpoint presentation. Then they throw you a big end of the summer celebration. If none of that sounds cool...you also get to spend 10 weeks in the city by the bay. A couple of the students and I even found a free weekend to head out to lake tahoe for some relaxing.
Let me know if you want to know more about it, but the deadline for applying is the 1st. I reapplied for this year.
