How Important is summer research. I really wanted to do summer research this upcoming summer but I have to take biochemistry in order to take my MCAT. Do medical schools see summer research as a vital part to an applicant ?

For many schools, summer research is not necessary. A strong MCAT score is far more important. However, if your gunning for the ivy-leagues, then research might be more of a factor. However, if you can find the time to do some research, I highly recommend it. It cultivates critical thinking skills, and I found that my research in biochem really helped me on the MCAT. You might even find that you like it, and might wish to do it in medical school.

It won't matter as long as you're spending your summer productively. Even to top med schools. There are other summers and there are research opportunities during the school year.

I will echo what the above posters said:

1. study and do well on your MCAT, I would not sacrifice a lower score in order to participate in summer research (if you can do both then great, but if not, then prioritize MCAT)
2. I would try to allocate a few hours per week on some volunteering or some other, non-intense, extracurricular -- something you can point to as evidence that your summer was productive (aside from just studying)
3. research can be an important part of your application, but it doesn't have to limited to a summer project. In fact, it may be more rewarding to engage in research long term (for a few semesters, for example) so you can see a project play out over time (plus get a solid letter from someone who you worked with for a while)

Good luck studying.
