I have a question regarding the summer research opprotunities that are out there. Many are directly related to the MD/Phd route and many are based only for thosed interested in the MD degree.

I am interested in the Md/Phd program at this one school(bigger stipend and better research opprotunites), but right now, I am fairly certain that I am only interested in applying to that school as MD.

If I do the Md/Phd research, will it hurt me when I apply as MD only? I figure that the summer program at my top school will help me, but will they become upset if I only apply MD after doing the md/Phd program. Will they think I am tricking them?

Thanks for any help.

Also, how competitive are this summer programs?

If the summer research is specifically an MD/PhD summer program (as opposed to an REU, SURF, SURP, SURE type PhD program), then they would not hold it against you if you chose to apply MD/PhD. The purpose of the MD/PhD specific programs is to give you an opportunity to determine if that route is right for you.

If you know that you are not interested in MD/PhD (or research in general), then I would avoid participating in these programs, as the primary emphasis (95+%)is placed on laboratory research. The program that I participated in at Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan Kettering last summer consisted of about 600 hours in the lab, and a total of 5 hours (all summer) in the hospital.

Admission to these programs is extremely competitive.

Which program are you interested in?

PM me if you have any questions about my experience.

Vix,
You mean you actually got into the Rockefeller program????? Evidently they didn't like me. 😉 That's ok though. I got into another one that I loved, but the rockefeller program seemed awesome.

Jarrod,
I think those that run these programs realize that many people will change their minds over the course of the summer. Some people find out they detest research while others realize they love it. I wouldn't think they would hold it against you.

Only 14 people got in, and more than 300 applied. Its the only one i did get in (probably because I was a freshman). Which program did you participate in? Any plans for this summer?
