  1. Veterinary Student
Hey I am a first year vet student and this is my first time posting on this forum so I hope that this is an appropriate question to ask. But I am currently trying to find work for this summer and would prefer to have an experience in swine medicine and if that doesn't work dairy would be my second choice.

I have a couple say that they have herd of other people contacting companies like pfizer, Elanco, and the like and getting them to essentially pay them to work for a veterinarian that does some off site research for them. It may be too late already this year to make anything like this happen for this summer, but for next summer I would like to know if anybody has done something like this and how they go about setting it up? What requirements are there and all that jazz?

Any information or insight would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I haven't heard of this specific arrangement per se. My recommendation would be to find a veterinarian who DOES off-site research and talk to them. I think it would be much easier to organize if you had a particular veterinarian and project in mind. You might try talking to your profs to see if they have any suggestions in your school's area. You never know, it might not be too late for this year. Good luck!

Hmm. I looked into pharmaceutical company internships this summer but didn't see any that dealt with pigs or cows for that matter.

I know that some people are doing research with laboratories here on campus that work with swine...they do a lot of cardiovascular research on pigs...maybe you could see if PIs on your campus are doing any swine research?

There are also swine summer internships I've heard of...I would have to look them up. It's not my area of interest so I didn't pay much attention to them. I can see if I still have emails in my inbox.

I don't know specifics... but I think Cannon Valley Vet in MN takes externs for the small animal portion of the practice. It wouldn't hurt to ask if you can extern at the swine animal section. I can't imagine they would pay you much, but I have no specifics.

A class mate of mine has a research scholarship doing swine research this summer actually. She's going up to the University of Saskatchewan. I'm not sure of the details though.
