Any ideas for the summer for an MSI about to finish first year? I am very interested in PMR and wondering what all of you suggest. Thanks.

I believe there is some sort of PAID internship at RIC. I'm not sure what the program is called though. If you would like to spend the summer in Chicago, you should check it out.

Yeah, I looked into this and called, and they said it's a little late in the game to be applying. Thanks though. Any other suggestions, doesn't necessarily have to focus just on PMR...

Normally, I would have told you to just take the summer off and relax. However, the fact is that PM&R is pretty competitive these days so if you haven't done any research, I think you should look into that. Other than that, doing some shadowing would be a good idea, to get yourself ahead of the game and to try to figure out if PM&R is really what you want to do.

I spent the summer after first year hiking in the Rockies, surfing in Florida, and volunteering at a camp for kids with chronic/terminal illness (Boggy Creek Camp). It was a blast. 😀

Strange. The externship deadline isn't until April 3rd. I don't see how they would it is late in the game to apply unless they work through rolling admissions or something.

OMMFellow06 has a good idea. Any chances to get a chance to shadow a physiatrist in any number of settings would be nice, even if it is just for a couple of days to get a better feel for the specialty.

Other than that, another option is to relax and pursue any other passions you have besides medicine because you may never get this extended period of vacation time again.

Family medicine in Alaska?

PM&R is not derm, you don't need 260 board scores and ten publications just to get an interview!

1. they do have a rolling admission at the program
2. I shadowed a PMR doc for about a year before starting school (but will definitely consider this option)
3. What were you "allowed" to do at the camp (medically)
4. Any ideas on any OMM stuff that can be done anywhere?

Stretch, I have applied for the RIC program (its an awesome opportunity)....but I'm starting to make back-up plans now b/c it is really competative and I haven't heard anything yet. You may want to still apply if you think that you can turn in a very strong application...it would be worth it IMO.
I guess that pretty much puts me in the same boat as you. If I don't get in I'm going to try and set up some shadowing in as many different aspects of the field as I can. I don't know how else to try and get a feel for how things really are before electives at the end of 3rd year. I'm also going to try and get really involved w/ some OMM/rehab research at my school....I figure that will be a good way to get research experience and more exposure to OMM all at once. Good luck w/ planning your summer.
