Seeing as my "anti-bitching" thread has been recently resurrected and mutated into a "bitching" thread, I've decided to start another.

My Question is this: why don't we ever see Irish or Canadian med students on this board bitching? They make up over half of the NA students in Ireland, so why don't they ever raise their voice to complain? And I'm not talking about "efficiency" complaints (NEWSFLASH: Europe isn't North America!), but real complaints regarding the quality of Education.

I think we all know what the unspoken suggestion is here, but I'm willing to be proven wrong. So any Irish or Canucks that wish to detail real problems with the quality of education in Irish med schools please do!

So please discuss, and remember, no biting and/or crotch shots allowed.

There are people from America-junior on here complaining. If they don't want to do GP in Newfie, then they have to train in the US. That's why there's more talk about US residencies even though some of the people are Canucks.

To the Irish, the education is par for their course, so why complain? Plus, they just don't complain out loud in general. Too bad that, it might lead to some improvements.
 
In real life, Americans bitch the loudest and most frequently and then go in with guns blazing. Maybe some bred "you owe me and I'm gonna lay the smack down" attitude. When we bitch it ends up sounding all whiny and makes everyone else go SHUT THE HELL UP! Canucks bitch too but they're quieter and slower about it. Irish bitch and somehow it ends up sounding like flowers 😉. Or actually, they bitch around in circles and don't do anything about it.
 
Regarding education, I can't see where our learning is deficient. No, it doesn't prepare for USMLE (ie the way we're taught physiology isn't the way it appears on boards, biochem isn't as picky, and I really wish our pathology had been more organized) but some of the course problems may stem from the inefficiency problem, and it's not meant to prepare for the USMLE.

In clinical practice, we are taught how to deal with patients while drawing the info. we need to make a diagnosis. We aren't "worse" at that than our US counterparts, they're not learning any strange new exotic diseases that we've never heard of, they aren't any more capable of coming up with a management plan than we are. So I can't see where education is subpar.

I don't think Irish students can complain about the education; it's very good. Granted, the facilities are a bit substandard at times, but the staff do the best with what they've got. As an undergraduate I would have been more than happy to have been accepted to study medicine in Ireland; as a graduate there were many reasons for me selecting the UK over Ireland though.

Don't get me wrong however. If I were paying over E25,000/year for my education I'd want just that little bit more. But at the end of the day that's not going to happen, because as has been pointed out many times in these forums, the schools are (in theory) there to educate Irish doctors, not cater to international students (except RCSI).
 
what's going on here.. this forum is driving me insane.. i'm a 13th grader currently doing my alevels to meet the offer of ABB to enter RCSI.. i live in dubai.
Unfortunately (i guess), i don't exactly know what i'm thinking anymore. Lots of people are bitching about it and it's not exactly helping because i don't know if i should go anymore.. i dont mean to complain or anythign but i'm going to be there for the next 5 years of my life atleast. (forget the money bit) Yes there are positive comments here and there but i'm thinking twice now, is it really worth the money? or should i just take a gap year, get sm medical experience and try for the UK next year(again..had no medical experience+overseas=got rejected 😛)?? i know it's MY choice but helping me out here won't hurt 🙂, and i know it depends on how i live my next 5 years and how hard i work.. but i'm still seriously confused.. i figured most of you here are older than i am and experienced the irish med schools. oh and.. it's hell being an arab anyhwere now, but how bad is it in ireland? racism is everywhere but it would be nice to know how bad it is it in certain places so that i atleast have an idea.
i'd appreciate the help.. thanks..
 
oh and forgot to say this sorry.. i would rather not do the gap year honestly but if that's my best choice then i might as well go for it if i REALLY have to..
 
If you're from Dubai won't your government pay for your schooling anyway?
None of the brown people I knew had any serious problems in Ireland. There were little irritating things very occasionally, but nothing too bad that I ever heard about.
 
that's because i live in Dubai but i'm not actually from there so they don't pay for anything..

I actually left America to visit America-junior and though it was perfectly nice. Toronto seemed to be more like China-junior really, but that might have just been the neighborhood I was in. Fun though...

Peerhaps it could be because the Canadians and Irish:

1. Have some class
2. Spend their valuable time studying and pursuing worthwhile activities rather than whining incessantly on a bulletin board about how sad their lot in life is.

I doubt there are many Irish on these boards at all since it is irrelevant to most of them and often insulting. If they are even aware of SDN, they probably have no interest in it. Some are on it, but they have nothing to complain to us about as far as their schools go.

I don't know why Canadians don't make up more of the comments. Maybe there's some other board they prefer that discusses Canadian residencies more and US residencies less. Maybe they think they are clever and make thinly veiled insults that are totally obvious then point out that their obvious insults are implied as if we had missed them. Maybe they don't have any insults to spare for Ireland since they save all their insults for Americans while being almost totally culturally and economically (85% of your imports and exports) dependent on us. Maybe we don't hear many complaints from Canadians for some other reason that hasn't yet occurred to me.

PS- You can have Avril Lavigne, Celine Dion, Alanis Morrissette, Shania Twain, Sarah McLachlin & Bryan Adams back, but I want to keep Natasha Henstridge and that girl from Lost thank you very much.

I think you're getting a little off track here. Canadians studying in Ireland are in a poorer position than Americans. The vast majority must pursue postgraduate training in the U.S. (which is not a bad thing) due to the residency matching format in Canada, which produces many more obstacles. For instance, not having the option to return home after completing medical school for at least another 3 -7 years, arranging visas (additional expenses), reestablishing socially and financially in another country (again), writing both American and Canadian board exams (very expensive), to name just a few.

In my experience during medical school in Ireland, I found that Canadians were equally displeased with the level of inefficiency of the Irish medical education system, the very poor value for money, and the lack of accountability from the Irish medical schools to the foriegn medical students whose tuition fees contribute to a large part of the Irish medical school budgets.

Lastly, I have seen several Canadians critically appraise the Irish medical education system on this board and they seem to have the same view as their American counterparts.

True. Sorry. I even like Canada, just not it's too common anti-Americanism. I like Ireland too, just not the Atlantic Bridge Program. 😍

It's funny that the comments from Canadians in this thread have expressed anti-Americanism rather than the guess that Canadians might actually like Irish schools. Many of my friends in Ireland were Canadian, and they felt the same about the schools as we did- a few like it, most tolerate it, some hate it.

:laugh: You seem to confuse being a pompous c k sucker with having class. You can't fake class by stealing silly phrases from whatever bloated rooster you like to impersonate to try to sound clever. dontbsme, does anyone buy your bs in the real world? I'd imagine they all snicker behind your back. How tall are you? My initial diagnosis is short man's syndrome, but I have limited info at this point, could be wrong.
 
Listening to our complaints can help applicants in 2 ways:
1) encourage them not to come
2) get their expectations to a reasonable level so that they'll not expect TOO much and hopefully will be pleasantly surprised at having experiences better than ours.
Acting like it is so great all the time just sets people up for disappointment. If I had heard the truth about Irish schools, I might not have gone or if I still went, at least I would have had a better idea of what I was getting myself into before it was too late. A few years down the road I found myself very disappointed and very in debt.
Why do you think it's so bad to share our experience? Do you really think Canucks have a better experience and that's why they aren't heard as much? or that it's classy to not complain about taking it in the rear? I'd be interested to hear your opinions, well not respectfully etc.'s, but the rest of your opinions. :meanie:

I'm Canadian by the way, and couldn't give a s__t less about whether or not Americans think my entire existance is thanks to their economy. Which, by the way, accounts for a majority of our business because A) there are 10 times the number of Americans... think about it, and B) because the way you have maintained your financial fingers in pretty much everyone's economic pie is by asserting your militaristic export of freedom to every corner of the globe that actually has things you want.

By the way, every statement made above about USA is not a personal attack on you, but rather a statement about your foreign and economic policy. So don't bother grinding your gears over it. Besides, I can't even think of a single American I didn't like, and I've met plenty.

Well, I don't think your existence is much different from mine except for colder weather and a different flag. I was saying that it's ridiculous for Canadians to be constantly insulting the US when we're so similar and when you seem to be biting the hand that feeds you.

It's not MY foreign and economic policy. My policy would be a lot greener with more Sunshine, Happiness, and Puppydogs.(believe it or not) 😍

Seriously though, if I could have at least one current Irish (besides Dr. Strangelove) or Canadian student say something about their experiences that would be fantastic.

Also, you guys(and girls) are seriously hilarious, I start these threads for real information...but I continue to read them for the total drama that they dissolve into. I mean really, how did we get started on American foreign policy??? Don't answer that, it'll just start another argument...ok I'm done.
