Hi everyone,

I submitted my application for SUNY Downstate yesterday (11/3) and the deadline is today (11/4). I know that SUNY Downstate states that early applications are better so I'm really stressed that I submitted my application kind of late and won't be considered. For people who have been accepted, when did you submit your application?

Thanks!

I'm im the same boat as you... I sent my application in last week. I'm sort of losing courage as this is my #1 school and I don't have the best GPA's... 3.2 cum, 3.0 science, 3.2 prereq and only 100 shadowing hours. I just don't think my application will be competitive enough. But hopefully I'll be offered an interview and be able to sell myself there. Good luck to the both of us.. hopefully our last minute applications don't affect us.

I'm currently in downstate's program and GPA definitely isn't everything! They really focus on the student as a whole and experience, so don't lose faith 🙂

my stats are somewhat in the same area and i got accepted. i did submit my application in early October. I doubt that just because you submitted days before deadline your application will be overlooked. Good luck and make sure to be ready for interview 🙂

Anyone hear anything from SUNY Downstate yet? I'm getting so worried and anxious!! =(

They haven't started yet. I emailed admissions because I was worried too, they said they're going to start the process of inviting applicants for interviews within the next week. I'm so nervous!

Ahh now I'm even more nervous haha! I'll be checking my email every hour next week to see if I get anything! Fingers crossed for an invitation :xf:

I received the same email in early December about my application being ready for initial review. Has anyone been invited to interview or accepted to Downstate yet?

I heard they don't plan to start until late Jan.

Hey there! I just received an email this morning about an interview in February (the date being about 2 weeks from today).

Also, does anyone have any input on the area surrounding SUNY Downstate? I've heard that it's pretty bad, so I'm kind of nervous about traveling there for my interview (I'm from NJ).

@futureotter I'm currently a first year at downstate's program and while yes, the area is definitely not the greatest, don't let it deter you from considering downstate. I was nervous about the area, especially because I knew I'd have to live in Brooklyn for the commute would be too long for me. I currently live in the dorms and I've had a good experience. Walking around during the day is fine, to and from the subway for instance, I just personally wouldn't walk alone at night but I'd really say that for anywhere. The school has a shuttle service so that students don't have to walk around the neighborhood but my classmates often just walk to and from the subway together; most don't live in this neighborhood. As far as your interview, I parked in the parking garage at kings county hospital because on street parking is tough and I had no problems. I really love our program and am glad I didn't let the area persuade me in to going to another school. Good luck with your interview! 🙂

@dancer715 Thanks so much for your reply, it's really eased my nerves a bit! I grew up in the suburbs so I'm pretty worried about potentially living in Brooklyn still, but I know there are nicer neighborhoods that students live in. The main thing attracting me is price and quality of the program. Even though I'm OOS, Downstate is probably the cheapest program I applied to. Plus I like that I would get in-state tuition for the second year! For the dorms, do you share a room?

For my interview I'll actually be taking the train in since I'm from NJ. I'm going to be walking from the Winthrop Street station to campus. I heard it's a ten minute walk and shouldn't be too bad?

@futureotter you're welcome! And no, I don't share a room in my layout. I live in an "apt" with my own room, my roommate has her own room, and then we share a bathroom and kitchenette. It's pretty basic but cheaper than living in a nicer area. And yup, Winthrop is about 1 block over and 3 blocks down; during the day there's usually always students, professors, doctors, etc. around walking to and from so you definitely won't be alone!

Hi all,
I'm so glad I found this thread! 🙂
I am currently completing my Bachelor's in Psychology and worked hard to put together a decent resume. My GPA is over 3.94, I took some extra science courses, am editor- in- chief of my college's science journal, am a member of Psi Chi, and did some interesting observation hours. I submitted my application in October and have not yet been invited to an interview. I am concerned because I've heard from classmates that downstate does not show interest in applicants from the college that I'm attending. I would really love to attend their program since I've heard excellent things about the program and am really impressed with downstate's graduates.
....but now I'm really nervous!

😕

I received an email this morning inviting me to interview in about two weeks 🙂 They probably will still be sending them out in the coming weeks, don't worry yet!
