suny downstate

4.0 nat sci gpa, history/education major (former teacher), 150 hours of volunteer work in 3 different settings and yes they require an interview with a writing sample...it isn't bad though...I was accepted but I'm actually attending a different program 🙂 Good luck!

How weird I was going to be a social studies teacher as well and decided to change my track. Anyway, I may be moving to the NYC area so downstate is my first choice. I am really nervous though I have the pre-reqs with about a 3.4 and my cumulative from Ohio State was a 3.4. I have 50 hours of volunteer work but plan to keep doing more until application time. I am a good writer so not very worried about the sample. Do you have any idea as to how many students they accept and how competitive it is?

I believe they accept around 30 students per year. I'm sure it's become pretty competitive, I'd try to do anything possible to make yourself stand out when you apply. I think they look most at your pre-req GPA more than anything anyway. Regarding the writing sample, it isn't that bad, you just need to know what your talking about and as long as you've observed a decent amount of hours you certainly will know.

My cumulative GPA when I applied was 3.34 and my pre-req GPA was a 3.09. While GPA is important, you should make the most out of your volunteer experiences and explain how they've helped you decide on OT. That will let your interviewer see that you're serious about this field and that you won't be a wasted seat.

And I was an anthropology major fresh out of college.
