I need to vent.

I don't undrstand the law that does not allow PCO students to do externships in NY. I am not sure if it has to do with the suny optomety school. If it does, I can understand a suny student getting preference for NY sites, since they go to school in NY. (Even though I was born and raised in NY). However, if a suny optometry student never contacts a particular doctor and this doctor wants me for externships, why can't I do it there.

Also, it doesn't make sense that there are students that go to suny optometry and are not from NY and they get to do there externhips in NY, even though some of them may return to their original hometown, whereas I plan to practice in NYC.

I have nothing against suny optometry school. I am just sad about this law
🙁

Christie,

when you began at PCO, did you know about this law at SUNY?
like, did you bother asking PCO if you could eventually do an expernship in NY?

I might have known about it, but right now we're picking our 5 month sites for January 05-May 05 so its an issue I had to deal with recently.

I am feeling much better. I nominated a site and awaiting for approval. 🙂

christie,

keep us posted on the situation....
others like you may be in the same boat...

Thanks, I will 🙂

I don't know anything about the SUNY law if there actually is one. I can tell you however SUNY is a malignant place to be in. Very political and nasty especially among some clinical preceptors you will deal with.
If that is where you wanna go Good Luck.
Really good luck to you!

Externships are your clinical rotations. At PCO we have to do 18 months of rotations: a general 5 month site, hospital, disease, primary care and peds/primary care(emergency) or peds/low vision. 🙂

Sounds fun. I hope I get into PCO! Although I live in Long Island, NY where I could train to SUNY, PCO would permit me to drive my car around 😀
