hey all! i have an interview coming up with Dr. J, and was wondering if anyone has had him recently or in the past. What kind of questions can I expect from him (i'm assuming Dr. J's male)? I have heard he is one of the more relaxed and informal interviewers. Am i correct in thinking so?

thanks! and good luck to all else applying this year. i truly hope you get into the schools of your choice. 🙂

hey wassup man...i have my interview next wednesday but i dont know with who...how did you find out who your interviewer is??

Dr. Johnson is kind of the main interviewer for SUNY. He's the one that travels around to schools, so that they wouldn't have to fly out to NY. He's coming to my school soon (though I won't be interviewing until next year). I think he'll be hitting all the UC's so he'll probably interview you too, Dr4eyes. Oh, and FYI, I heard SUNY likes the UC's for some reason, so you kinda have a slight head start (check out their state demographics).

I don't know much about him yet, but I do know he likes questions addressed to him (I know a SUNY graduate who personally knows him). If anything, you should at least ask about the new dorms that SUNY is getting...opening 2008 I believe. They also added new exam lanes, so you can ask about how that came about. He'll be straight forward and ask you why optometry, and why NY.

Also, if you could throw in some interest in their programs (after a little research), that would help too. For example, they have a club called SVOSH that goes around to under-developed countries that allows you volunteer there for a week or so (skipping class). You can ask about their events...like I know they had a male auction a couple years back (haha, due to their male/female ratio) that went towards charity.

He likes honesty, so if you don't know something, be honest about it, don't bs. Finally (minor detail, but my friend told me about it so it MIGHT have come from Dr.J), having loose change or keys in your pocket (anything that makes noise), can be seen as unprofessional, and he'll judge you on that. Haha, I make it sound like he's super anal, but in general, I've heard he's a friendly guy. Hope that helps.

Hey ,

I have an interview with Dr. Johnston on 11/9 Wed, also! I am from UCSD.
What schools are you guys from?
Dr.Johnston is a really friendly, and I have met him twice.
I also agree that the best advice for the interview is to be yourself, and be geniune, and not fake.
Also, just in case , make sure you turn off your cell phone! 🙂

Does anyone has any other advice!?

Good Luck guys!

Ariel Winter Or Any Of You Guys, How Do You Know If Dr. Johnston Is Interviewing You?? I Know Dr.johnston From The Open Houses And I Did The C-step Program At Suny Over Summer And I Know He Is Really Nice. Suny Is My First Choice. But I Really Want To Know How You Guys Know Who Is Interviewing You For Suny.originally My Interview For Suny Was Nov2 But I Had To Reschedule Beacuse I Had A Biochem Test So My Interview Is Now On Nov16. Does Anyone Have An Interview For That Day??? One Last Thing, This Website Is The Greatest, Its Been Very Helpful. Thanks Guys

i know dr. johnston is interviewing me because he emailed me and told me he would be in british columbia (vancouver) on nov. 7, so i did not have to go down to new york (i am canadian) for my interview. i called to schedule my interview, and i was told it would be a one-on-one interview with dr. johnston at ubc. good luck at pco - it is really laid back with lots of nice administration, i wouldn't worry too much about it. 👍

Hey Ariel -

Good luck on your interview with Dr.Johnston!
I would love it if you keep us posted on how it went.
It would be most appreciated by me since my interview is 2 days after yours! 🙂

no problem. i don't think it will be too bad, really. i just came back from my first two interviews at neco and pco and i think i did really well on both (well, that's what both interviewers told me anyway). i have the philosophy: if they like you, great, if not, too bad, as there is little one can do about that. the interview process is entirely subjective (unfortunate); however, this is something we all have to accept as part of the admissions process. i will just have to go in (as i have for my past 2 interviews) with a clear mind and confidence in myself. i know myself well, and i know why i want to become an optometrist. i have nothing to worry about. i know you'll do fine. i will certainly make a post after i come back and tell you how it went. no problems there. good luck! 🙂

Hi,
I have an interview with him Nov 22/05...have no clue how it'll be. I have a specific question, I hope someone will reply: I'm a Canadian student and seeing as SUNY is in the US, will they ask questions regarding the health services system in US (ex. who gives licences, different associations and what they do etc.). The reason I ask is because I've been to the Waterloo (in Canada) interview, and other than asking about myself and the why choose Waterloo/Optometry, they also asked about the Canadian associations and who it all functions....

...Also..I've got an Interview at PCO on Dec 22 (wanted to get it over with right after Finals)....same questions for PCO....will they be asking Qs related to the US...or only about the school in general and about why Optometry, and about Optometry profession?

...well..hope to hear from someone soon

- Thanks
Rekha

Do we need to bring a resume to the interview?

I was told I need to bring a photo, I'm guessing a passport style photo, to the interview when Dr. Johnton comes. Did you guys have to do anything like this as well?

yes, SUNY requires a passport-style photo. just one. and unofficial oat scores if they have not recieved official ones yet. good luck! 👍
