hi,

I have my interview with SUNY this week! And I am of course nervous, scared, excited...

I wanted to know how long before the actual interview should I be there?
They told me they would send me a confirmation letter but since their system was down, I did not get anything.

Also what exactly do they do with the picture they ask for?
Any last minute advice, or anything specific I should know from anyone who interviewed there or has recently interviewed at SUNY (especially those current events/political questions!)

Thanks 🙂

1) Just arrive about 10 minutes before the time you are scheduled for. Your essay doesn't start until the actual time. They would make a few copies of your essay and read it during your interview. So make sure you are able to explain your response.
2) I brought a 2 by 2 passport photo with white background. I am not sure which kind of photo they are asking for. But they accepted mine anyway. My interview was kind of chill because Dr. Johnston was out of town. And usually he's the one who would ask political questions. I guess just be prepared with upcoming presidential election. Just get a copy of New York Times when you arrive in New York and briefly read about it and you should be fine. I think they just want to ask your opinions, not particularly want to test you. All my questions were very general like why optometry and why SUNY. Make sure you go over the questions posted in the interview feedback link. It's the best way to prepare. The duration of interview really depends on who the committee members are, somewhere between 30 to 60 minutes. I guess just relax and be yourself, good luck! 🙂

I got there 15 minutes late and still got accepted.

thanks...i had it today and Dr. Johnston was not there...so no political questions.
I am just unsure of what they thought about me!
Are we suppose to write them a thank you letter after the interview?

Aw man, you missed out. Dr. Johnston is a funny and interesting guy, he made the interview go by so much quicker for me. He did ask 2 or 3 political questions though (major current global issue, how Arnie is doing as the govenator in California)

I would totally recommend writing them a letter. Hopefully you remember the names of your interviewers. Send them each an individual email thanking them for their time. Just go to http://sunyopt.edu/faculty/facdir.php , type in their last name and their email should pop right up. If you don't remember their names, maybe you can try emailing [email protected] (which Dr. Johnston usually checks I believe) and asking them for the names.

Good luck!

Yes, I did miss out on him, but I have met Dr. Johnston before and no doubt he is a very nice person. If he was there I would have heard about my application and interview performance today, but unfortunately he was out of state. So now I have to wait another week or two.
I remember their last names but unfortunately there are a few doctors with the same last name so I guess I will just ask admissions for it.

Thank you!

Dr. Johnston is a very approachable and nice person, he didn't ask me the political question though, it was another female optometrist.

I've heard about SUNY interviews being really intense before I actually go, but it's not the case, my interview flows pretty well (I think 🙂, and I like the fact that they are sending out 4 doctors to interview students instead of just admission staff, bc to me that shows they care about interviews. Plus if you know all the stuff about optometry, it makes the conversation easier bc you would feel like everyone in the room is on the same frequency.

I just interviewed 2/12, and now I am just waiting for a response.
