Hey, so I interviewed an SBU last week and I was wondering whether the other people who went would be interested in comparing experiences--we could do by PM. It's one of my top choices and I'd really like to share experiences since their interview process is so strange. Particularly--when did you POI tell you they'd be notifying people.

Sorry to bother you, but I know SBU's invites for interviews are SO random (sometimes they accept you in April without ever interviewing you...weird) so I was just wondering if you would mind telling me who your POI is? It's one of my top choices and I still haven't heard anything. You can PM me if you want. If you don't want to share, don't worry, I understand.

I got a call from my POI yesterday actually, and I am going there to interview on Tuesday, 2/5. Pretty short notice!

yeah, so was mine (aabout a week and a half)--mind if i ask who your POI is

I had my Stony Brook interview on 1/17 with Dr. Hajcak, my only POI. I also talked with Dr. Klein, Dr. Davila and Dr. Klonsky, as well as the director of the program. It's definitely a unique interview style, but I enjoyed the individual attention.

I first heard from Dr. Hajcak on December 18th. We had a phone interview on the 20th, then he invited me shortly thereafter to interview in person. He said they're used to moving quickly, because they used to have a late application deadline and late interviews. So now that they've moved the deadline up to December 15th, they're still moving quickly 🙂

I really enjoyed my interview there. If anyone wants to compare experiences, feel free to PM me!

I interviewed a couple of weeks ago, thought it went really well, but haven't heard back yet! Am starting to panic a little.....Has anyone heard yet, post-interview...?

I actually have my interview tomorrow, with Ted Carr. I'm looking forward to it because it seems like it's going to be pretty laid-back. He set me up to have lunch with one of his students before I go meet with him, and then I think I am going meet some other people as well. I'll update afterwards, I guess!

Any news? What did everyone think of interviews?

(my poi was klonsky)

I had my interview yesterday - I thought it went pretty well but I guess you never know! I don't know how everyone else's went but mine lasted about 5 hours and I met with two faculty (and another briefly) and three students. It was kind of exhausting!

Has anyone heard anything yet? I'd love to hear how other people's interviews went!

Mine was really tiring too - a very long day. I thought it went well, but I haven't heard anything yet. This process is so stressful!

I haven't heard anything either--they told me 2-4 weeks.

I hate the wait--it's probably the worst part of the entire thing. :/

SBU is my first choice and I still haven't been contacted for an interview...do you think that means I'm rejected? It's wierd though bc I've been contacted by the current number 1 ranked school for an interview, this process is so unpredictable! I'd be interested to hear about your experiences interviewing in case I do get lucky enough to get an interview! You can PM me if you want 🙂

my advisor mentioned to me yesterday that some candidates who applied to our school cancelled their interviews because they got accepted into SBU. He was just telling me about how some applicants who had amazing credentials got in to SBU so I shouldn't feel bad about not getting an interview there. SBU was my first choice but now I'm interviewing at a different school that may actually be an awesome match.

Either way I can't wait for someone to post here saying they got in so I can can stop hoping that interview email may still come. But just wanted to let you guys know that it seems like some acceptances are out!

SBU is wicked weird with their interviewing process. Each professor does their own interviews and they interview students one at a time. I'm not really sure why... perhaps they interview one by one until they find someone they like? Anyway, I know someone who got in there a few years ago with no interview whatsoever. She just got a phone call in April. So I wouldn't COMPLETELY cross it off your list until you get an official rejection letter. But yeah, I'd say chances are slim now.

SBU was my #1 choice as well. It is an extremely competitive program. As for school rankings... clinical psych programs are all pretty random. Each program/professor is looking at different things. I got an interview at one of my top choices (not SBU) and rejected from one of my lowest choices. It's a crazy process.

Thanks for info!!! I'll keep SBU on my "only by a miracle" list!:luck: Good luck to everyone who already interviewed there!!!!

I applied to work with Klonsky, too, but no word. Pretty sure I'm out of the running on that one, ah well.
Good luck psych123!

Thanks for the information! It would be so much easier if schools sent out rejection emails as well as email invites so we wouldn't have to keep on guessing, wouldn't it?! I was just wondering if anyone interviewed with Davila or D'Zurilla as their POI's? If so, then I know for sure I've been eliminated 🙁 but I'd appreciate the info for sure! I'm doing the interview process from Europe so it'd be nice to know just for planning purposes! Thanks guys!

Last time i spoke to the program coordinator she said that interview invites would come on a rolling basis until March (I don't know if it's early march, mid-march or late march).

She said that the way it works is that each prof gets a pile of applicants interested in working with them and from there it's basically up to the POI as to who, when and how they will contact applicants. I'm guessing that some may prefer to rank their favorites and go down the list until they find a match, others may choose to contact 3 or 4 right off the bat. Maybe some do it sooner, others take their time.... hard to say.

I think that way is even worse than most for us here on the waiting side.... We also gotta keep in mind that apparently they had something like 500 applications. Even if they cut 50% due to GRE, interests, GPA, etc (like they were discussing in another thread), we are still talking about 250 applicants, which is more than most programs get in total. That is really really competitive!!!!!!!

That's good to know about interview invites coming on a rolling basis until March (I assume she just meant until March and THEN you can give up hope, haha). Kind of gives me some hope. 🙂

Stony Brook is one of the most competitive programs there is from what I hear so it doesn't surprise me they got close to 500 applications.

We'll just have to wait and see I guess..

SBU is definitely tough to get in. I thought I was guaranteed an interview since one of my LORs came from a close friend of my POI at stonybrook.

They do a fantastic job of placing people in faculty jobs there. I noticed when I was looking through the faculty listings when I was choosing schools to apply to - Stony Brook and Wisconsin-Madison were probably the two schools who placed the most people in large, doctoral university faculty jobs.

I also thought I would be guarenteed an interview because my POI sends pretty much ALL of his students to do their pre-doc at my work. Guess not!

Oh, but I didn't show any interest in being a professor so perhaps that's why... Not that I never would, but it's just not something I see myself doing until much later in life.

That was probably it.

Might I ask why it was you applied if you don't want to go into academia? Unless what I heard was incorrect, they are one of the most research-oriented universities in the country.

I am VERY interested in doing research (I've been doing it for a few years now). I just don't want to be a professor. I work with autistic children so it's quite easy to do research and not be a professor with this population.

Ahhh.
Not sure how they would feel about that then. I imagine as long as you are looking to publish frequently in high quality journals, the setting matters less.

Were you thinking a psychiatry department split between research and clinical work, or did you have something else in mind? It probably depends how it was framed on whether that would come across as "acceptable" to a research school.

I was thinking something similar to the environment I work in right now. I work at an Applied Behavior Analysis school for children with autism. We publish frequently (the National Autism Center is actually located within the building). Also places like the Kennedy Krieger Institute at Johns Hopkins.

Oh well. It looks like they didn't take it well. 😎

Any word from SBU?

it's quiet on my side.

I haven't heard anything either!
