SUNY Tuition Increase?

NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed a tuition hike that would increase the tuition at major SUNY schools such as UB and Stony Brook by ~$4000, while the rest of the SUNYs (like Upstate and Downstate) would increase by ~$2000. This is just for the undergraduate programs. Does anyone know how this would affect tuition for the medical schools located at these sites?

expect this kind of tuition hike to happen every year for the next 10 years. Cuomo and the NY state legislature are crooks and are so far in the red with their asinine programs that they will do whatever it takes to collect "fees"

Cuomo is unfortunately one of these DINOs (Democrats in Name Only). He repeatedly runs ads bragging that he has no intention of raising any taxes. Instead, he raises public university tuition as if no one will feel that pain.

These ridiculously under-regulated financial services companies in NYC are the reason why unemployment is so high (higher welfare enrollment, higher crime) while they continue to break profit records quarter after quarter and take home huge bonuses.

Why not raise NYS upper bracket income taxes and capital gains taxes instead of making public U students pay increasingly more for their education?

Probably has to do with how UB and SBU both are research institutions. Don't know about binghamton.

My wife just graduated from SUNY Upstate med school and is glad she got the heck out of there. To give you an example of some of the crap they pull: in the middle first semester of this year, they decided to retroactively raise tuition for that semester by $2000 (without, I believe, additional financial aid to cover it) because NY has one of the most useless state legislatures in the country and they (once again) passed a late budget with no foresight. New York state is in big financial trouble and I would predict that tuition at the state med schools will increase dramatically because of it. Her graduation speaker even said something to the effect of "You have SUNY in the name but let's not pretend that the state spends much money to support this school or that it will spend any money on it in the future."

I would also wager that the private schools in NY will be in some trouble because the NY legislature's next big target will probably be medicaid (even more so than it's already been). Moral of the story: avoid NY state.

the tuition for med school will probably go up another 4% but at $25k it's still a good deal. as far as i know all SUNY med schools will be the same price for the foreseeable future

despite your well thought out and not at all hyperbolic warning 🙂rolleyes🙂 i don't think we'll see many people choosing Tufts/BU over Columbia/NYU or Jefferson over Stony Brook any time soon. Yes NY state might be in some financial trouble (like many other states) but most med schools in the state can still stand on their reputation and the SUNY schools are and will still be a great deal for NY residents and will continue to attract OOSers, especially from cali.

Realistically speaking the $2000 tuition hike for a SUNY still makes it a lot cheaper than private schools, but it still sucks to have mid semester raises. Undergrads are having the same issue and it's not gonna turn out well with tuition hikes and financial aid decrease...

Binghamton is one the four research universities in the SUNY system along with Albany, UB, & Stony Brook. Just making a friendly jab as part of the intra-SUNY rivalry.
