Currently accepted OOS to Upstate but highly ranked on the waitlist for Brody and looking for advice if I get the call

SUNY Pros:
  • More established/older program
  • Has home residency programs for any specialty
  • Been in NC for a long time and upstate NY is very appealing to me
  • All clinical rotations at Upstate hospital/in Syracuse
SUNY Cons:
  • Huge OOS Tuition at least for one year

Brody Pros:
  • In state tuition significantly cheaper
  • Have some friends in school/residency here
Brody Cons:
  • No home Anesthesia program
  • Higher attrition rate of students
  • Some travel required around Eastern NC for 3rd year clinicals

Overall if the money was the same I'd go to Upstate and not think twice about it to have a new experience of living outside of NC. I know both schools, while not overly prestigious, are well respected and match students to highly ranked residencies every year. My current interests are in cardiology, anesthesia, pathology, or radiology. Does Upstate being slightly higher ranked move the needle at all for where to attend? Thank you in advance for all advice

If you can guarantee in-state tuition for years 2-4, I would personally take SUNY Upstate. I got accepted to BSOM, and I have to say that although the price point is good, it's definitely a primary-care focused campus with far fewer research opportunities. They are building a new medical education building, but for now, the facilities are outdated. If you go into anesthesia, cardiology, or RADS, you can make up that debt difference easily. I would not be a penny pincher about this. Go experience something new! Syracuse also will have a lot more to do than Greenville (practically nothing in the town other than ECU). Pick SUNY!
