Hi guys, can people that have been accepted to Downstate and Stonybrook share their gpa's, i am wondering if i have a chance w/my 3.4. have been getting really scared by the non accepted people list. pretty much all of them have higher stats than me. i am currently shaddowing an AIDS doc in downstate, so hopefully that will help.

GPA alone can't really be a marker of your chances of getting into med school. Can you share your other stats as well? I have a lower GPA than you (3.24), but I got into UB. Don't be discouraged, as GPA alone is not the determinant especially for state schools 🙂

i have a 3.4, hopefully 30 MCAT but i have done a lot of volonteer wor4k relating to AIDS some of it surrounding Downstate. i just feel that GPA is my #1 problem.

your gpa is competitive enough. Breathe.

Dr. Su,

As the previous poster commented you shouldn't be too worry about your GPA. Right now, instead of spending time and worrying about your GPA, start (if you haven't already) preparing a well written and strong application essay. I guarantee you that your interviewer will thoroughly read it. In your essay, please do not just state your research accomplishment but how this research made you want to become a physician. Adcom people seem to like to see how your clinical experience helped shaped your decision in becoming an MD.

You should also try to obtain a strong recommendation (if you haven't already done so) from your AIDS research PI.

A strong application letter, strong rec. letters, a 30 on your MCAT, and a quite decent GPA combined will give you a fairly strong case. You should not just limit yourself to state schools but also try out for some upper ranked schools as well 🙂 You never know...

Best of luck on your applications

Assasin that's cuz they prob think that you'll not wanna go there if accepted? 😛
