Do you guys answer these types of questions?
I believe UNC and some other school had this question... "List all other schools applied to" or something along those lines.

Is it mandatory? Does it negatively effect how they look at your application, if you've applied to many schools?

I haven't completed my UNC supps, but I thought to bring it up, since it's a rather strange question...

Yes I answered it truthfully in the secondary.

Also, one of the three people I was interviewed by at UNC asked me not once but twice where else I would be interviewing. I never understood it...I mean it's UNC, obviously not my backup school...

What do you mean by "not understanding" why they asked you that question? 😕

Here's what I think she's saying...

Some schools, like NYU, might ask you this question to get a "feel" for whether or not you really want to attend their school or if they're just a "backup" option. For example, if you're interviewing at NYU, Harvard, UPenn, UNC, and Baylor, the NYU folks will probably realize that you have them on your list "just in case" something bad happens elsewhere.

I think this could work in three ways.
First, they might just say, "Screw it. There's no way they're coming here and we're wasting a spot if we give them an acceptance."
Secondly, they might say, "Wow, this is a stellar applicant. We had better do something to get them to come here. Scholarship time!"
Thirdly, they might say, "Oh well. Might as well offer them a spot."

I'm guessing the first and third options happen the most often! 🙂

UNC, though, shouldn't really be anyone's "back up" choice... which is why it might seem odd for them to be so concerned.
Personally, I just think they want to know if they're really your first choice or not.
