I am wondering if anyone has any insight on the following.

So on Monday I got the "Congratulations you Matched." Fast forward two days....

Today I got a proposal from an Anesthesiology group wanting to supplement my salary during residency training if I would be willing to agree to work with their group upon completion. I have never heard of anyone in a similar situation except for military, health service corps, etc programs that you sign up for during medical school and residency. The deal itself was actually brought to the table by an ortho group for which I work with in my spare time while they are covering professional hockey games. Lots of fun hanging out in the locker rooms and doing some procedures every now and then. This is definitely a city I am considering making my permanent home in the future regardless of this current incentive. Anways, just interested in hearing some opinions on the idea as I never imagined having to think about planning my future in the same week as sweating out the match.

Never heard of that in the anesthesiologist arena, although I have a plastics acquaintance who supplemented a plastics-fellow's salary until the fellow was done with his fellowship. But this was a more intimate relationship...the plastics dude had known the plastics fellow for a long time, the plastics fellow was from this certain town and absolutely wanted to come back, the plastics dude had a thriving, 7 figure income-type aesthetics-only practice complete with his own surgery suite next to his office, etc.

Very intriguing. We might see more of this in the future, with the paucity of anesthesiologists. Probably more in smaller-city/rural settings...

Anyway, as far as youre concerned, I wouldnt do it, bro. Wanna supplement your salary? Moonlight alot/a little. I think theres too much downside from your perspective.

Alot can happen to the dynamics of that group in four years. Stability now, assuming they're a stable group, doesnt guarantee stability when you're done. Alot can change in that amount of time. And I'd hate to be tied to a deal I didnt want to honor secondary to changed group dynamics. Their collections may go down. Their insurance contracts may go to a neighboring hospital.

Unless your dad is the group founder, I wouldnt do it. Hell, I probably wouldnt even do it then.

When you finish, you want the freedom to look at your opportunities carefully. You may feel different now than you will four years from now about where you wanna live. You may meet a bikini model from La Jolla Calif at a drug-rep dinner who falls absolutely in love with you and wants you to move to La Jolla.

Remember you can still consider that place later. Maybe even earlier that your last year of residency. But I wouldnt tie in now for a few extra bucks. Too much potential downside.

Just my opinion, bro.

I have been to La Jolla on several occasions, very nice area.

A few extra bucks would be close to doubling a resident's salary and without the requirement of working extra shifts to moonlight. A very tempting offer considering the amount of debt most of us are in right now. I agree I do not want to limit my opportunities in the future and accepting such a proposal would do just that. Another subject of this discussion that causes me some concern is the stability of the practice but that it appears to be all in the past now. However, in four years who knows?? Oh well, something to ponder over St. Patty's day or maybe the following two days of recovery.

Thats good advice, as things can change a lot in the next few years, you may decide to do pain..get married etc. Its too early to make a commitment IMHO 👍

Jet, where are these types of drug-rep dinners being held? Man, I need to get out of the midwest!

I wouldn't do it either. Too much can change in 4 yrs. Plus, I'll bet they want you to repay it in some form or another once you are part of the group. I'd be real surprised to see them give you money for free. I arranged something of this sort when I joined my first group. It was an interest free loan to be paid back once I was partner. It would have taken me about 5 months to pay back at their current salary. But as I reached partnership the group had changed so much that I didn't want to stick around plus I wanted a better lifestyle. All I can say is that we came up with a mutually agreable way to resolve the loan. 😀

Oh, another thing to think about. Will this stipend put you in a higher tax bracket? Most likely.
