The decision this past week was a big one.

The APTA has been neutral on the law and the ruling, but as someone beginning the process of becoming a PT, I'm curious what others may think about the law and how it could impact the profession in the future.

Let me just say at the start that I'm all for arguments on the internet that ignore concrete information in order to pit melodramatic defense of liberty vs. the righteous indignation of loving our neighbors, but if anyone could point to specific places in the law that have a bearing on what a new PT might expect about the future of the profession, I am a rapt audience.

Since the Affordable Care Act is about 906 pages long, I don't think anyone -except those who drafted it- has read it in details, including those who are so vociferously for it or against it... IMHO, more people covered = more opportunities for all medical professionals. However, insurance companies will still have their word to say, and as long as we have for-profit insurance companies in the mix we will have heavily business-flavored cost controls.
Bottom line - I don't think anyone knows how it's going to work out.

Somewhat off-topic: Did you make up your mind to leave the actuary field for PT?

Yep. The trigger is pulled. Thank you (and goyo) for your responses to my first post when I was coming to terms with my non-standard background and how that will impact my application. After those posts and communicating with some schools, I'm starting my pre-reqs a little bit earlier than originally planned to help cut down on the number of hanging classes I'll have when my application goes in.

Everything I've been learning about the field underscores how glad I am to enter the PT profession, and the ACA seems like it is going to have a huge impact on medical care...just what that is, who knows? If it comes up in an interview, I'll likely be adopting a stance similar to yours.

Congrats! I'm sure you'll enjoy the field.

As for me, so far I have no regrets. I'll keep you posted after classes begin in about a month and a half... Since the beginning of this year, I've lost 3 good friends, 2 to cancer and one to a heart attack. All of them were at the peak of their careers (one of them was a Fellow at Boeing, which is the highest one can go on the technical ladder there). I'm sure their very stressful lifestyle was partly to blame. So I am glad I got off the corporate ratrace... I no longer brood on Sunday afternoons because I know I'll have to go back to the salt mines on Monday, and I actually look forward to getting up every morning. That feeling is worth $100K/yr right there!
